Putting to rest one of the biggest misconceptions on the internet.

Today you are going to learn some disappointing news, but it’s important news nevertheless, because it speaks to the reality of the travel industry, sensationalism and clickbait.
The claim: There are 227 inhabited Greek islands. The truth: Not even close.
When I set out in February of 2026 to build the Greek island Directory, the only thing on my mind when compiling the original dataset was to cover that magic number, those 227 Greek islands. What I found after scraping the internet repeatedly was nothing short of disappointing- not because of the actual number of populated greek islands, but because of how widespread the lie was.
I searched and searched; up and down, laterally, alphabetically, across CENSUS, ELSTAT, even Facebook, to find evidence of these 227 populated Greek islands, but they didn’t exist, half of them, anyway. After combing every source I could, the final master list wasn’t even 100. In fact I had to do a double take earlier before writing this, and as it stands, tjere are only 98 Greek islands with regular populations, the other 129 don’t exist. Maybe they did, but they don’t anymore.
So… What to do?
Everywhere you search on the internet when it relates to populated Greek islands, that ‘227’ number is used like its gospel truth in listicles, travel blogs, major publications and adhoc travel sites including reputable booking sites. But I’m here to tell you it’s wrong, and it needs to be rectified, which brings us all to the purpose of this article: The truth.
As Greek island Directory continues its march forward to page one of Google solving longtail semantic queries and giving travellers and prospective residents a database they can trust for their decision layer, it is my hope this particular article will too find its way into the real world and make an impact, because as it stands, even AI search summaries are using that number, 227, as if it is factual, but I assure you, the truth is less than half of that, and we need to get it out there.
