Who it suits and why
Best for travellers who want big islands that feel like mini countries. The 3 largest Greek islands are Crete at 8,336 sq km for Minoan Knossos palace, Samaria Gorge 16km hike and Elafonissi pink sand, Euboea Evia at 3,670 sq km for thermal springs at Edipsos, Karystos dragon houses and wild north beaches, and Lesvos Lesbos at 1,633 sq km for Kalloni wetlands birding, Molivos castle and ouzo distilleries. They suit explorers who want mountain driving, many beaches and towns in one trip not just one harbour.
Less suited to those who want tiny white village islands you can walk across in a day. If you want Cycladic cubes, caldera sunsets, no car hire and ferries every 45 minutes like Paros or Santorini, these 3 largest islands will feel too spread out, too green and too drive heavy at 2 to 5 hours across.
What to keep in mind
Size changes logistics. Crete has 3 airports Heraklion, Chania and Sitia with direct UK flights of 4 to 4.5 hours April to October and ferries 6 to 8 hours from Athens, Euboea is connected by 2 bridges from mainland near Athens so no ferry needed and only 1 hour drive from Athens airport, Lesvos has Mytilene airport with direct UK flights in summer and ferries 8 to 11 hours from Athens. All 3 are year round lived in with winter ferries still running unlike small Cyclades.
On the ground allow time and wheels. Crete needs 7 days minimum and car hire as Chania to Heraklion is 2.5 hours and to Elounda 1 hour more, Euboea needs car as north to south is 2.5 hours with winding roads, Lesvos is 1.5 hours west to east and best with car for wetlands and west petrified forest. Book gorge hikes early morning, carry cash for mountain villages and check meltemi winds can still delay small boats around Lesvos in August.
