Ios

Ios is an island that gets mislabeled as just a party island, and then surprises you. Yes, there’s the Chora strip where the music spills out until 4am, but drive 10 minutes and you’re on a road that goes nowhere, overlooking cliffs that drop straight into the deepest blue, with nothing but goats and a tiny church painted the exact color of the sky. Its beaches aren’t pretty little coves — they’re long, raw, wind-carved stretches like Mylopotas and Manganari, where the water is so clear you can see your shadow on the sand below you.

It is the kind of Cycladic island that feels both completely social and completely solitary. You can spend the morning hiking the old donkey path from Chora to Gremiotissa monastery, perched impossibly above the sea, have lunch in a port-side taverna in Ormos that hasn’t changed its menu in 30 years, swim until your skin is salty, and still make it back for a drink in a bar carved into the old walls of Chora. That’s the Ios trick — it lets you be both versions of yourself in one day.

Who it suits and why

This is for travellers who want that classic Cycladic island that still feels free. Ios suits people who want big sandy beaches by day and a proper old town buzz by night, without the Mykonos price tag. It’s led by Mylopotas beach, because it’s long, golden, and built for doing as much or as little as you want. You get shallow water that’s perfect for swimming, windsurf and SUP when the meltemi builds in the afternoon, beach bars with loungers, and boat days to nearby islets and sea caves. Chora is the heart, whitewashed lanes stacked above the port, with windmills, blue-domed churches, and sunset views back over the harbour that are made for golden hour photos. By night it’s one of the most social islands in the Cyclades, with small bars and clubs around the main square that keep it backpacker-friendly and easy to meet people, while still being low-key compared to Paros or Santorini if you stay near the beach. Day trips give you variety, with snorkelling at Kolitsani and Manganari where the water is electric blue, coastal walks to Agia Theodoti and Paleokastro for quiet coves, and short ferries to Paros, Naxos, Santorini and Milos if you want to island hop. It’s perfect if you want beach days, boat afternoons, sunset Chora, and a fun night out you can walk home from. It’s less suited to you if you want total quiet and five star privacy every night. Ios has a young, social energy in July and August, so if your holiday is all about silent coves and early nights only, you’ll want to base at Manganari or Agia Theodoti and dip into Chora when you want it.

What to keep in mind

Ios is all about beach, Chora, and timing the wind. It has no direct UK flights, so you fly to Santorini, Mykonos, Paros or Athens, then take a ferry. Ferries from Santorini are usually 45 minutes to one hour thirty and 30 to 60 euro, from Paros and Naxos one to two hours thirty, and from Piraeus in Athens five to seven hours and 50 to 90 euro. May to June and September to early October is the sweet spot. You get 22 to 28 degrees, sea temps of 22 to 25, light morning winds and a mellow Chora, with beaches that are empty enough for a towel anywhere. July and August is the classic Ios summer, hot at 30 to 35 degrees midday, meltemi 15 to 30 knots in the afternoon that’s great for windsurf but choppy for SUP, and Chora that gets lively after eleven. On the ground, base yourself where you want to be at night. Mylopotas for beach clubs, windsurf and easy Chora access, Gialos port for ferry convenience and sunrise swims, Manganari or Agia Theodoti for quiet, sandy coves and sunsets, and Chora itself for white lanes and views. A studio is usually 60 to 110 euro in shoulder season and 100 to 180 euro in August, a lounger set 15 to 30 euro, a small boat or RIB share half day 40 to 70 euro, and a souvlaki 4 to 6 euro. Bring flip flops and trainers for Chora steps, a dry bag for boat days, a cap and water for walks to Paleokastro, and some cash as ATMs get busy in August. Book ferries a day ahead in high summer, do beach walks and photos before ten or after five, and go in early June or mid September when you get warm seas, empty sand and a Chora you can enjoy without queues rather than full August crowds on the quay.
