Agistri

Agistri is an island that feels like a secret, even though it’s only an hour from Piraeus. Tiny — you can bike around it in an afternoon — but it has that deep-green, pine-tree-meets-turquoise-water thing that the more arid Cyclades don’t have. The water around it is absurdly clear because it’s sheltered in the Saronic.

It is a Saronic island that actually feels like an island getaway, not a suburb of Athens. You land in Skala or Milos, rent a bike that rattles on every bump, swim at Dragonera or Aponisos where the lagoon goes pale blue to navy in three steps, and eat fried anchovies at a taverna where the owner will tell you his life story. In summer it’s young Athenians and campers and free divers, in September it’s almost empty. It’s small enough that by day two you know everyone at the port, and that’s the point.

Who it suits and why

This one’s for people who want a green island an hour from Athens. Agistri, sometimes spelled Agkistri, is tiny, pine-covered and super laid-back in the Saronic Gulf. It’s right next to Aegina, but feels way quieter. If you want easy swims, bike rides, and not much else, you’ll love it. Two main villages, Skala up north where most ferries come in, and Megalochori, or Myli, a bit more traditional with white houses and little tavernas. Both have a strip of hotels and restaurants right on the water. Beaches are small and pine-fringed. Aponissos and Dragonera on the west coast are the famous ones, super clear turquoise water, organised in summer with sunbeds and a taverna. Megalochori beach and Skala beach are sandy-ish and right by your room for a morning dip. Then you have Mariza in the south, and Skliri and Halikiada in the east. Halikiada is the naturism spot, it’s pebbles and a bit wilder. You get around by bike, it’s flat-ish between Skala and Megalochori, coastal paths, pine forest that smells amazing in the heat. There’s a bus and taxis too if you don’t want to pedal. Evenings are simple, fish taverna, cold beer, maybe a little bar in Skala. No clubs, no big resorts. It’s perfect if you want a weekend from Athens, a first Greek island that’s easy, or you want to island-hop Aegina and Agistri together. Great for couples, friends who want to switch off, and families who don’t want big waves. It’s not for you if you want nightlife, huge sandy beaches, or loads of sightseeing. It’s small, you can see it in two days. Think relax, swim, bike, eat, repeat.

What to keep in mind

Agistri is all about quick ferries from Piraeus. You leave from Piraeus port. Hydrofoil with Aegean Flying Dolphins gets you to Megalochori, Myli, in about 55 minutes to an hour. Regular car ferry with Saronic Ferries or Blue Star takes about 1.5 hours to Skala. There are loads of sailings, about 84 weekly in summer, and it’s 11 to 15 euro for the slow one, 20 to 33 euro for the fast one. You can also hop from Aegina, 10 minutes, or Methana and Poros daily. Most people fly UK to Athens, about 3.5 to 4 hours, then taxi or metro to Piraeus and straight on the boat. Best time is May to October. June and September are ideal, 26 to 28 degrees, warm sea, not too busy. July and August is 30 to 33, busy on weekends with Athenians, book rooms ahead. May is lovely and green. On the ground, stay in Skala if you want beaches and restaurants on your doorstep, or Megalochori if you want quieter and a bit more Greek. Rooms are small hotels and studios, 70 to 110 euro shoulder, 100 to 180 euro August. Local transport is bus and taxis, but bike hire is like 8 to 12 euro a day and is the best way. Free camping used to be a thing but you can’t pitch tents in the forest now because of fire risk, so book a room. Bring bike-friendly shoes, reef shoes for the pebbly bits, and cash for small tavernas. Book ferry a day or two ahead in August, especially for car. It’s a super easy add-on to Athens, even as a day trip, but one night is better, you get that sunset at Aponissos.
