Astypalaia

Astypalaia is the butterfly-shaped island where the Cyclades end and the Dodecanese begin, halfway between them and belonging fully to neither. Above the Chora — which is one of the most striking in the Aegean, all white houses climbing to a dark Venetian Querini castle — you get Cycladic wind and light, and below in the bays of Livadi, Vatses and Kaminakia you get Dodecanesian deep-blue water and pebbled beaches with tamarisks for shade.

It feels remote because it is, a full day from Piraeus but only 45 minutes from Kos by plane, and that isolation has kept it authentic: donkeys still used on the kalderimia, beekeepers making thyme honey, tavernas serving poungia — little cheese pies with local kopanisti — and nights that are quiet except for the wind in the castle. It’s an island for people who want dramatic Cycladic architecture without the Mykonos crowd, with a slower, more Dodecanesian rhythm once you come down to sea level.

You’ll love it here if you want white villages and Aegean blue without the chaos. Shaped like a butterfly, where the Cyclades meet the Dodecanese, with a whitewashed hilltop Chora and dramatic Querini castle overlooking the sea. Traditional windmills, narrow stone alleys, panoramic views. It gives the feeling of an end of line, isolated island, which it essentially is as ferries tend to terminate there. Best for couples who love beautiful Choras, calm beaches and a slower rhythm, history buffs, and travellers who value privacy over structured group tours. Quiet beaches, rugged landscapes, authentic local atmosphere, peaceful and untouched. Evenings in Chora feel both local and welcoming, that balance is why it keeps pulling people back. Beaches are numerous but not trophy beaches, good enough, often better by boat. Livadi sandy, organised and family-friendly right below Chora with view to castle, Pera Gialos pebbly bay with quiet and busy ends and tavernas, Steno is the narrow strip linking the two halves with shallow turquoise ideal for young children, Kaminakia one of the most beautiful for swimming, Vathy and Drakos Cave if you go full-day. It’s especially suited for escaping tourist crowds, romantic adventures, and electric scooters instead of rental cars, loudest sound is the sea. Very little concession to tourists, you take it as is, and that’s the charm. Less ideal if you want long perfect sandy beaches, you won’t specifically go there for wonderful beaches, you go for the Chora, views, and quiet.

Getting to the end of the line

It’s at the southeastern edge of the Aegean, so plan. Flights: Sky Express flies Athens ATH to Astypalaia JTY twice daily in high season, about 1 hour. 5 direct flights a week on some searches. Popular also from Leros. Ferry: Blue Star Ferries from Piraeus to Astypalaia 3 to 6 times a week depending on season, overnight around 9 to 10 hours. Ferries do tend to terminate there, so you get that remote feel. Works best May through September when flights and ferries are frequent and life centres around Chora and beaches. From October to April island slows significantly, some businesses reduce, suits those who prefer space and residential vibe. Stay in Chora for views and castle walks, Livadi for beach easy, or Pera Gialos for taverna row. Scooter or small car useful, roads winding. Many best beaches accessible by boat, private daily cruise to 6 beaches is popular for couples, families with children over six, or friends. Book flights early for August, it’s small airport. And build in a buffer if ferry connecting to other Dodecanese, Astypalaia is not a hub, it’s the quiet end.
