Chalki

Chalki is the tiny Dodecanese island nine miles west of Rhodes, just 28 square kilometres and about 400 people, all living around the perfect horseshoe harbour of Nimborio. Pastel neoclassical houses, a clock tower, and waterfront tavernas wrap around water so clear you can see the anchor chains, with a restored 14th-century Knights Castle watching over everything from the hill above and the abandoned village of Chorio just below it.

It’s one of the first Greek islands to go almost fully green — solar park and electric buggies instead of many cars — and life is deliberately small-scale: swim at Pontamos or Ftenagia, eat fresh fish at the harbour, walk up to Chorio at sunset for the view back to Rhodes. Chalki feels like what Symi would have been before it got discovered, intimate and beautifully kept, an island you can walk end to end in an afternoon and want to stay a week.

The quiet escape that stays quiet after 5pm

You’ll feel it here if Rhodes town felt too much. It’s the simple, serene and authentic option off Rhodes, picked by people who wanted to get away from it all and certainly did. Harbour softens after afternoon crowds head back to Rhodes, calm evenings, walkable town, crystal clear blue waters that invite endless swims. Best for travellers who like familiarity and low effort, couples or solo travellers seeking calm and authentic island stay, and hikers. Inland is very picturesque, ideal for discovering dozens of country churches with unique religious paintings, the kyfes traditional small rustic stone structures, Burnt Cave and Castle of the Knights Hospitallers. Beaches while mainly small win you over immediately. Kania Beach is favourite with hardworking friendly staff, worth a few days of holiday, Pondamos small artificial sandy beach by port, plus rocky coves you can walk to, easy reach beautiful beaches from town. Chalki is clean and nice, tavernas good, try the Chalki shrimps small fried eaten with head and tail. Less ideal if you need sandy miles or nightlife, it’s about simple Greece, steps from sea, swim anytime, bright minimal studios. We personally prefer Chalki for its quiet, walkability and easy beach access over busier Symi, if you’re debating.

The 50-minute hop from Rhodes

So close you can day trip, so nice you’ll want to stay. Direct ferry from Rhodes to Halki runs all year round, average crossing 1 hour 50 minutes from Tourist Port in Rhodes town, 3 weekly sailings in low season more in summer. Best trick is Kamiros Skala on west coast of Rhodes, new route with Nissos Chalki, just 50 minutes and cheaper than Rhodes town, ideal for permanent residents and for you if you’re in western Rhodes. Timetables around 08:00, 11:30, 16:30, 18:30 from Kamiros Skala, 10:00 and 11:10 from Rhodes port, about 8 to 14 GBP. Boat only once a day in off-season and doesn’t go often, so once you are there you are there, plan that. Fly UK to Rhodes direct 4 hours, then taxi or bus to Kamiros Skala about 45 minutes from Rhodes town, or stay in Rhodes town night before and hop. Best time is May to October, June and September calmest and less crowded, July and August busiest but still quiet after day boats leave. Base in Emporio harbour village, everything 1 minute on foot, port, restaurants, shops. Bring cash for small boats, water shoes for rocky beaches, and light hiking shoes for inland churches and castle. Book ahead in August, only a handful of stays steps from sea.
