Crete

Crete is not an island you “do” in a trip, it’s a country-sized world of its own — Greece’s biggest island, with its own dialect, music, mountains that stay snow-capped into May, and 1,000 kilometres of coastline from Balos to Vai. In the centre is the spine of Psiloritis and the White Mountains, with the Samaria Gorge cutting down to the Libyan Sea, and around them four different cities that feel like four moods: Chania’s Venetian harbour and labyrinth alleys, Rethymno’s mix of fort and old town, Heraklion’s buzz and Minoan weight with Knossos five minutes away, and Agios Nikolaos’ softer eastern calm.

Everything is more intense here: the food — graviera, kalitsounia, staka, dakos, raki that never stops — the history that goes back 4,000 years to the Minoans, the beaches that range from Elafonisi’s pink sand to the sheer drop of Preveli palm beach. Crete rewards time and driving, because one valley to the next changes music, cheese, and accent, and it never feels like a resort island; it feels like a mainland that happens to be surrounded by sea.
