Despotiko

Despotiko is the uninhabited island just southwest of Antiparos, a low double-bayed island of scrub and marble that until recently most people thought was just good anchorage for boats heading to Paros. Since the 90s excavations have revealed it’s one of the most important archaic sanctuaries in the Aegean — a huge temple of Apollo that rivaled Delos — with finds that suggest pilgrims came from across the Cyclades long before Paros was dominant.

You can still only get there by private boat or small excursion from Antiparos or Pounta, anchoring off the narrow isthmus between Despotiko and Tsimintiri and wading ashore, with no facilities, just a fenced archaeological site and goats. The beaches on the south side are long and almost empty, the water absurdly clear, and you swim with the feeling you’re on the edge of a dig that is quietly rewriting Cycladic history.

The other Delos next to Antiparos

You’ll love it here if you like ruins you can have almost to yourself. Small, uninhabited island lying just 700m southwest from Antiparos, Greece, place of great archaeological importance.
