Kalamos
Kalamos is the forested Ionian island between Lefkada and the mainland, about 25 square kilometres and officially uninhabited in winter except for around 300 people in Kalamos village and Episkopi. It’s not on the tourist map at all — no airport, no ferry with cars, just a small boat from Mytikas on the mainland — and is covered almost entirely in pine and oak, with steep hills dropping straight into the sea and just a couple of beaches like Myrtia and Asprogiali that you reach by track or boat.
It’s part of the Natura 2000 network because the waters around it shelter monk seals and dolphins, and life is bare-bones: a few rooms, tavernas that open when there are people, goats everywhere. Kalamos feels like the Ionian as it was fifty years ago, quiet, a little rough, perfect if you want to disappear with a book and a snorkel and hear nothing but cicadas and the wind in the pines.

Kalamos is a hidden gem in the Ionian Sea, a serene escape from everyday life. This is not a party island, it’s a haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers.
Think pristine beaches with lush green vegetation right to the water, tranquil atmosphere, and secluded coves instead of beach clubs. The coastline is rugged cliffs and hidden bays — Agios Konstantinos and Myrtia are the names everyone mentions, perfect backdrop for swimming, snorkeling, sailing, and just relaxing. Asprogiali on the east coast near Mytikas is a pure landscape visited only by boaters, close to Myrtia. The water is crystal clear, calm all day, hidden from winds, clean like a swimming pool.
It’s in the core of the inner Ionian marine protected area, the largest marine protected area in Greece, so it feels wild and protected. There is a main village with a kindergarten and school where all the kids go, a couple tavernas, that’s about it. If you love rich cultural heritage, warm hospitality, and total quiet, this is it.
Good to know before you go
Kalamos is easily reached from the mainland by regular ferry service from Mytikas in Aetoloakarnania, year round. Ferry Mytikas to Kalamos runs twice daily, about 35 minutes. That’s the main way in — you drive or bus to Mytikas on the mainland, then hop over.
From Athens, bus to Mytikas area then ferry. Or join a sailing tour that stops here — a lot of yacht charters include Kalamos for its spectacular beaches. You can also come from Astakos on the mainland.
No big hotels, no nightlife. Bring supplies for the beach, good shoes for walking, and expect no crowds. Best for off-grid slow travel, snorkeling, and sailing days.
