Lemnos

Lemnos is a large, low-lying island in the North Aegean, 477 square kilometres, closer to the Dardanelles than to Piraeus, with volcanic hills, vast wheat fields, and long sandy beaches that make it feel more Anatolian than Cycladic. Its capital Myrina is built under a huge Byzantine-Venetian castle where deer roam, with two bays below — Romeikos and Turkish — and the island is dotted with salt lakes, dunes at Gomati that look Saharan, and fishing villages like Moudros, famous for the WWI Armistice.

Mythologically it was the island of Hephaestus and the women of Lemnos, archaeologically it’s home to Poliochni, considered one of Europe’s oldest towns from 4000 BC. Lemnos is windy, authentic, excellent for food — fava, kalathaki cheese, Muscat wine — and for beaches like Thanos, Keros, Evgatis and Plaka, plus a developing surf scene. It’s off the main tourist route, so you get big skies, empty sand, and an island that still lives off farming and fishing.

How to get there

Sky Express, Aegean Airlines fly from Athens International Airport to Limnos LXS 3-4 times a day, 57-59 minutes, average €39-45. Most popular option flight.

Alternatively Blue Star Ferries operates ferry Port of Myrina Limnos to Port of Piraeus twice a week. Seajets operates car ferry Lavrio to Port Myrina 3 times a week, departure 15:30 about €28-35. Athens to Lemnos ferry price starting £25-28 average £25-28, flight faster.

Also connections via Kavala to Port Myrina. Small island but you need car — volcanic landscapes spread out.
