Leros
Leros is a Dodecanese island of 54 square kilometres, mid-way between Patmos and Kalymnos, with deep natural bays that made it a major Italian naval base — its architecture still shows that, with Lakki being one of Greece’s best examples of rationalist Art Deco town planning. Above, the white houses of Platanos and Panteli climb to the great medieval castle of Panteli, and the island is green, hilly and indented with coves like Alinda, Agia Marina and Vromolithos.
Known as Artemis’s island in antiquity, Leros today is quiet, a bit melancholic and very Greek, with fishing boats, small hotels, and a history marked by war and by the old psychiatric hospital at Lepida. Beaches are small and pebbly-sandy, perfect for swimming, but people come for the atmosphere: the old boatyards, the Italian-era cinema, the war tunnels, and the feeling of an island that hasn’t tried to remake itself for tourism.

How to get there
It lies 317 kilometres from Athens port of Piraeus, from which it can be reached by nine-hour ferry ride or 45-minute flight from Athens. About 32 km from Turkey.
