Lesbos, called Mytilini by Greeks after its capital, is the third-largest island in Greece at 1,636 square kilometres, lying close to the Turkish coast opposite Ayvalik, with a landscape of olive forests, 11 million trees, petrified forests at Sigri, pine mountains and two large gulfs, Gera and Kalloni. Mytilene town is a lively port with a Byzantine castle, Ottoman mosques and neoclassical mansions, while villages like Agiassos, Mantamados and Molyvos keep strong craft and religious traditions.

Ferry from Piraeus to Mytilene 12h15m, Blue Star Ferries Hellenic Seaways Super Fast Ferries connecting Piraeus and Sigri Mytilene ports, trip around 11h18m average, 13-hour journey, available weekly. Fast ferry summer about 7 hours arrive after midnight. Ferry journeys long tedious up to 15 hours. Earliest ferry 20:00 fastest crossing 10h20m. Once on Lesvos roads good but island very large car hire recommended. Daily ferries major airport just south capital Mytilene.
