Skiathos

Skiathos is the westernmost and smallest of the Northern Sporades, 50 square kilometres of pine-covered hills dropping to more than 60 sandy beaches, with Skiathos Town as its single main settlement built amphitheatrically around a port. Just six kilometres off the Pelion peninsula, it is green and lush for a Greek island, with dense forest interior, narrow roads, and a famous lag strip of beach resorts — Koukounaries, Agia Paraskevi and Troulos — on its south coast.

Known for its nightlife and as a charter and package tourism hub — with the airport runway right next to the sea — Skiathos also holds the Evangelistria Monastery where the first Greek flag was raised in 1807, and the medieval Kastro fortress on its north cliff. In summer it is busy, connected to Skopelos and Alonissos by ferry, with Lalaria beach, accessible only by boat, its postcard image of white pebbles and cliffs.

Skiathos is a small Greek island in the northwest Aegean Sea, the westernmost island in the Northern Sporades group, east of the Pelion peninsula in Magnesia on the mainland and west of Skopelos. The island has a northeastern to southwestern direction and is about 12 km long and 6 km wide on average, also listed as 13 km by 9 km, 11 km by 5 km, with an area of 50 km2, 49.90 km2, 61 sq km, 47.94 to 49 square km or 19 square miles, and a coastline about 44 km to 48 km, 46.2 km, with perimeter 48 km.

It occupies 1.6% of Magnesia prefecture and 0.28% of Thessaly region, with permanent population 6,088 in 2011, 4,883 in principal settlement, 5,000 inhabitants most in capital Skiathos Town, 5,802 in 2021 census. About 68% of Skiathos is covered in pine trees, making it one of the greenest islands in Greece, with lush pine forests, olive groves and rocky hillsides. The island is ringed with over 60 mostly sandy beaches scattered around, all sandy including Koukounaries rated 7th best beach in world and best in Greece, with turquoise waters. Koukounaries area holds the only pine forest habitat on an island in the Mediterranean Sea, protected by Natura 2000. The old Venetian fort in the port operates as a nautical museum honoring long nautical tradition, plus Evangelistria Monastery in hills and 14th-century ruins of Kastro castle.

This is for you if you want beach density, green hikes nearly 200 km of trails and lively Skiathos Town nightlife with boat access. It is not for remote isolation; Skiathos has its own international airport Alexandros Papadiamantis and is gateway to Sporades.

Papadiamantis, Mamma Mia and why Koukounaries touches forest

FYI Skiathos Town is where Mamma Mia! was filmed, and you can still see the boat used in the movie moored in harbour, while older local celebrity is Alexandros Papadiamantis, 19th-century writer whose home is now a museum — the airport is named after him. ICYMI the island features more than 60 beaches despite being only about 50 sq km, with Lalaria white-cliff beach only reachable by boat, Banana Beach for watersports and beach parties, and Koukounaries where pine forests literally touch sand — a Natura 2000 pine forest surrounded by turquoise water creating breathtaking landscape. Nuance: despite small size it is compact but heavily touristic, with beaches mostly along the single main road served by bus or 15-minute waterbus from Koukounaries jetty, so the forested north feels completely different from the developed south coast.
