Symi
Symi is a small island in the Dodecanese, 58 square kilometres of steep, bare mountains rising sharply from the sea 23 kilometres north of Rhodes, with its main settlement divided between the harbour of Gialos and Chorio perched above it. Built amphitheatrically with neoclassical mansions in ochre, pink and blue, its port is considered one of the most beautiful in Greece, a natural horseshoe bay surrounded by hilltop monasteries and pine valleys leading to beaches like Agios Georgios Dysalona and Marathounta.
Famous for sponge diving and shipbuilding — Symiots were renowned divers throughout the Mediterranean — the island is also known for the Monastery of Panormitis in the south, a major pilgrimage site, and for its rapid decline and revival after WWII. Car-light and compact, with no airport and access by ferry from Rhodes, Symi today is preserved as a listed settlement and is popular for day trips and longer stays focused on harbour life and boat trips.

Symi Greek Σύμη also spelt Simi is one of most beautiful and picturesque islands in Dodecanese group, located in southeastern Aegean Sea near coast of Turkey and about 41 km northwest of Rhodes, part of Dodecanese island chain about 15 miles or 24 km north of Rhodes, 25 miles north of Rhodes, 24 miles northwest of Rhodes, about an hour’s ferry ride. Area 58.1 square kilometres or 22.4 mi2 of mountainous terrain, also listed as 58 km2 highest peak, 68 square km just over 13 km long north to south approximately 8 km widest east to west, eight miles in length five miles at widest, 66 km2 population 2590, 2500-2603 permanent population 2021 declined to 2,603 with larger population summer, main industry now tourism.
Rocky island mostly barren and rocky save lush pine, mulberry, fruit-bearing trees adorning southern shores, steep cliffs and pebbly coves, towering peaks over 2,000 feet, semi-mountainous maximum elevation. Divided into distinctive areas — Yialos main harbour, Ano Symi or Symi Town capital, Chorio. Spirit of island remains intact.
This is for you if you want picture-postcard harbour with neoclassical pastel houses. It is not for broad sandy beaches; secluded spots accessed by water taxis or hikes.
Why the whole town is listed and why you need Panormitis in the plan
The guide critical: whole of Symi town is now architecturally listed — colorful neo-classical house facades built by seafaring locals who thrived in maritime operations and sponge diving. Greeks nicknamed Symi Lady of the Dodecanese because prosperity came from sponge diving and shipbuilding. Tradition of sponge diving strongly affected history and customs of Dodecanese, so visit to sponge workshop is standard part of day trip.
Access nuance: boat from Rhodes takes approximately 1 hour 45 minutes to reach Symi, with boarding card and map provided at port. Day trip runs two locations — Panormitis Monastery in south along inlet with massive Venetian-style building of Archangel Michael Panormitis, then perfectly formed Harbour of Symi with neo classical pastel houses, neo-classical mansions, cafes. Panormitis is not optional detour; it is massive monastery at southern tip you sail to after Symi Town. No broad sandy beaches — plan water taxi for pebbly coves. Capital also called Ano Symi at 856 00.
