Ammouliani

Ammouliani is the only island in Halkidiki where people actually live year-round — about 500 people, tucked in the gulf between Sithonia and Mount Athos, 10 minutes by ferry from Tripiti on the mainland. It’s not Cycladic white and blue, it’s Chalkidiki green: olive groves, low hills, fishing boats, and beaches that look more Caribbean than Aegean because the sand is that fine and the water stays that shallow.

It is a summer-family island, not a party island. You go for Alykes and Megali Ammos and Karagatsia, where the sea is warm and transparent enough to count the fish, and for the tiny, islet-studded Drenia islands just offshore that you reach with a water taxi for a day of pure swimming. In the village, everything is built amphitheatrically with red tile roofs and blooming gardens, and at the port they’re still unloading octopus the old way. Close to Thessaloniki but feels far from everything.

Your tiny sand-island escape off Halkidiki

This one’s for people who want a proper island feel without a long ferry. Ammouliani is the only inhabited island in Halkidiki, tucked between Sithonia and Athos. It’s tiny, under 5 km2, actually about 4.5 km2, and about 521 people live there year round. Ammos means sand in Greek, hence the name, and it fits. If you want that easy island vibe, you’ll get it here. One little town around the harbour, terraces, fishing boats, a few mini markets, and then beaches all around. More than 20 beaches in just 4.5 km2, so you can beach hop every day. Big ones are Alikes, huge sandy bay with a campsite behind it, Megali Ammos, long and shallow perfect for kids, Karagatsi, Faka, and lots of small wild coves you can only get to by renting a boat. Rent a boat from the harbour, 60 to 100 euro a day in shoulder, and you can stop anywhere you like. Water is clear, turquoise, and shallow for ages. There’s no big nightlife, no resorts. Evenings are harbour tavernas, grilled fish, views over to Mount Athos across the water. You can do a day cruise that combines Mount Athos monasteries seen from the sea and a stop at Ammouliani, super popular from Ormos Panagias. It’s perfect if you’re road tripping Halkidiki and want a couple of nights on a real island without going far, or you want family-friendly sandy beaches that are actually sandy, not pebble. It’s not for you if you want big sights, clubs, or luxury hotels. It’s small, quiet, and deliberately low-key. Think flip flops, boat, beach, repeat.

How to get there and what to pack

Ammouliani is one of the easiest Greek islands to reach. You get there from Trypiti or Ouranoupolis in Halkidiki. Ferry from Trypiti is only 15 to 20 minutes, runs at least 5 times daily in summer, more in high season, so you don’t have to stress if you miss one. Ticket is a couple of euros, cars can go too for around 10 to 15 euro. Most people fly UK to Thessaloniki, about 3 to 3.5 hours direct in summer, then drive to Ouranoupolis or Trypiti, about 1.5 to 2 hours. You can also get a cruise from Ormos Panagias that includes Ammouliani and the Blue Lagoon. Best time is May to October. June and September are ideal, 26 to 29 degrees, warm sea, not packed. July and August is 30 to 33, busy but still way quieter than big islands. May is lovely and green. The island is quiet in general, it’s known as a secret paradise for a reason. On the ground, buses run from the port to Alikes, Megali Ammos and Karagatsi on weekends in summer, but really you want a boat or a scooter. Scooter hire about 20 to 30 euro a day. Stay in the main town near the port if you want tavernas on your doorstep, or near Alikes if you want beachfront camping or studios. Rooms are simple studios and apartments, 60 to 90 euro shoulder, 80 to 140 euro August. Bring sand-friendly shoes, not just reef shoes, these beaches are actually sandy. Bring snorkel, cash, and a power bank. The island is small so you can walk some beaches but boat is better for the wild ones. Book rooms a few days ahead in August, especially if you want Alikes beachfront, and check ferry times back to Trypiti the night before. It’s tiny, so one or two nights is enough, or do it as a day trip from Sithonia.
