Atokos

Atokos is a small, mountainous private island in the Ionian Sea, between Lefkada and Ithaca and just northeast of Kastos, part of the Teleboides island group. At around 4.5 square kilometres it’s uninhabited, rugged, and covered in scrub and holm oaks, rising to about 334 metres, with no village or port — just steep cliffs, a couple of sea caves, and coves like One House Bay where yachts anchor in emerald water.

It’s known to sailors as one of the last truly wild Ionian islands, owned privately for decades and left completely undeveloped, which has kept its population of wild goats and boar thriving. You can’t stay there, you can only arrive by private boat from Lefkada or Meganisi to swim and then leave no trace, and that’s exactly why it feels like a secret — an Ionian island still as Homer would have seen it.

The pig island you swim to, not stay on

You’ll love it here if your perfect island has no people, just cliffs and clear water. Small, uninhabited Greek island in the Ionian off Acarnania, one of the most westerly and perhaps remotest of the Echinades Islands, no resident population as of 2011. Privately owned by the shipowning family of Panagiotis Tsakos, located 5 miles southwest of Kastos, between Ithaca and Lefkada, pure private island, famous for crystal water and photogenic One House Bay, dreamy day anchorage on Ionian routes. Best for sailors and day-cruisers who want seclusion, dramatic cliffs, untouched natural landscape, and that once-in-a-lifetime chance to see the famous swimming piggies, rare sight that made Atokos world-renowned on TikTok. Small chapel, goats wandering, no services on the island, think swimming, snorkeling, picnic and serenity. It’s a Natura 2000 area, integral part of maritime, tourist and nature-loving identity of Ithaca and Ionian for decades, even though private. There was recent ban talk on approaching and disembarking, Ithaca municipality reacted strongly, so respect any current rules. Less ideal if you want beach bars or overnight, you don’t stay, you anchor, swim, then cruise to Kastos or South Ithaca.

Getting there on your own wake

No ferries, only your boat. Fly UK to Preveza, Kefalonia or Lefkada, then base in Poros Kefalonia, Nidri Lefkada, or Frikes and Vathy Ithaca. From there rent smaller boat from surrounding islands, Ithaca, Kefalonia or Lefkada, or join island cruise departing Poros designed for relaxing day exploring stunning locations around Ithaca, or luxury cruise combining Kefalonia and Ithaca with Atokos highlight. Island cruises typically 7 hours, include crystal-clear turquoise waters of Atokos, dramatic cliffs, then Kastos smallest inhabited Ionian island with sleepy village and breathtaking beaches. Best time is late May to early October, calmest June to September, July and August busiest but still feels remote. One House Bay on east side offers shelter, good for anchorage. Bring everything, water, food, reef shoes, leave no trace, tidy visitors welcome. No facilities, no landing fees usually but check latest ban status before landing, swim from boat if restricted. For sail planning, Atokos is 5 miles southwest of Kastos, easy hop between Lefkada and Ithaca routes. If you want pigs, go morning, quieter, and don’t feed them human food, local skippers know the etiquette.
