If you’ve ever stared at a 7-hour ferry schedule for a 45-minute flight, you’ll understand why these islands matter. Greek islands with domestic airports are the quiet workhorses of the Aegean. No duty-free mazes, no jet bridges. Usually one tiny terminal, one café, and a walk across the tarmac to an ATR turboprop. You fly Athens to Milos, Naxos, Paros or Kythira in under an hour, grab your bag from a cart, and you’re at the beach while the ferry is still leaving Piraeus.

How I chose these islands

This list is not “every island with a runway.” It’s filtered to HCAA National Airports that currently operate only scheduled domestic flights.

We excluded:

  • All 15 Fraport/HCAA Concession International Airports (Zakynthos, Corfu, Kefalonia, Chania, Kos, Mykonos, Mytilene, Rhodes, Samos, Santorini, Skiathos etc.)
  • Islands with no airport at all (Ios, Folegandros, Hydra, etc.)
  • Military-only strips

If an island can take a direct charter from London or Berlin in July, it’s not on this page.

Nuances and a point about Athens

  • It’s Athens or nothing. These airports almost never have island-to-island flights. You go via ATH. That means if you miss your connection, you’re stuck in Athens.

  • Tiny planes, tiny baggage. Most routes are ATR-42/72 turboprops. Your big cabin roller will be gate-checked, every time. 

  • Seasonality is brutal. In winter, some routes drop to 3x per week. In summer, they double but still sell out. These aren’t airports where you can just “get the next one”.

  • Wind cancellations are real. Naxos (JNX), Milos (MLO) and Syros (JSY) are notorious for Meltemi diversions in July/August. Always have a ferry backup plan.

FAQ

Are domestic-only island airports international?

  • No. You cannot fly to them directly from abroad. You clear customs in Athens and connect on Aegean/Olympic Air or SKY Express.

Which airlines fly there?

  • Almost exclusively Olympic Air [operated by Aegean] and SKY Express. They cover 33+ domestic destinations between them. 

How long is the flight?

  • Most are 35-55 minutes from Athens. Athens to Astypalaia is the longest at about 1hr 10m.

Do I need a passport for a domestic flight in Greece?

  • If you’re EU, a national ID is usually fine, but non-EU citizens should carry a passport even for domestic legs. Safer to just bring it. 

Is it better to fly or ferry to Paros/Naxos/Milos?

  • Fly if time > money. A ferry is €60-90 and 3-5 hours from Piraeus. A flight is often €90-180 one-way in summer but saves you 6+ hours of transfers. 

What happens if my flight is cancelled due to wind?

  • You get rebooked on the next available, which can be 24 hours later in high season. This is why I never plan a tight international connection on the same day.

I have done both versions – the romantic ferry and the 6am flight from Athens. For these particular islands, the flight wins every time if you are short on time.

What I like about domestic-airport islands is they hit a sweet spot. Developed enough to have a hospital and year-round services, but not so developed that you have four cruise ships in the harbour. Paros and Milos are the obvious examples – they feel easy but still Greek.

When to Choose a Domestic-Airport Island

Pick one of these if you want time efficiency, predictable logistics, and an island that actually works year-round. They’re perfect for short breaks, family trips where ferry chaos is not an option, or as your first island before hopping to a boat-only neighbour.
