Hydra

Hydra is the Argo-Saronic island an hour and a half from Athens by hydrofoil that famously has no cars or motorbikes at all — only donkeys, mules, and water taxis. Its harbour is one of the most beautiful in Greece, a steep amphitheatre of grey and white stone mansions built by 18th-century shipowners, with canons, art galleries, and old captains’ houses stacked above a waterfront of cafes that hasn’t changed much since Leonard Cohen lived here in the 60s.

It’s austere, rocky and pine-topped, with small swimming platforms rather than big beaches — Avlaki, Hydronetta, or a boat to Bisti and Saint Nicholas — and a long tradition of painters, writers and Athenian weekenders. Hydra feels elegant but not fancy, all about walking the stone paths, swimming off the rocks, and hearing the clatter of donkey hooves instead of engines at night.

No cars, no noise, just stone and sea

You’ll love it here if you want an island that feels timeless. Best for couples, creatives, and weekenders who want relaxed pace, safe swimming, picturesque towns explore, romantic getaway. Family-friendly car-free easy wander without traffic worry. Less ideal if you want sandy big beaches or nightlife, it’s about harbour and walks.
