Ikaria

Ikaria is the wild, mountainous island in the eastern Aegean where people famously live past 100, not because of a diet plan but because time works differently — nothing opens on time, roads are rough, and the island’s own festivals, the panigiria, go all night with wine and dancing in the plateia. Named after Icarus who fell nearby, it’s all steep forested slopes of Atheras mountain, thermal springs at Therma, rocky beaches like Seychelles with white boulders, and villages like Armenistis and Nas that feel more like clifftop lookouts than resorts.

The north coast is where most people stay, with wind and surf and artists and backpackers, while the south is quieter and hotter. Ikarians are known for being self-reliant, a bit anarchist, anti-authority since they once declared their own Free State for five months in 1912, and that independence is the point — you come to Ikaria to slow down, hike, soak in radioactive springs, eat strong goat and wild greens, and forget what day it is.

Blue Zone island where time stretches

You’ll love it here if you want Greek but different. Unlike more glamorous distant neighbours Mykonos and Santorini, Ikaria has rustic laid-back vibe that matches its pebbled beaches and rugged landscape. Because few beaches it is not spoiled by drunken tourists, mainly favoured by Greek holidaymakers escaping heat of Athens, cash economy have cash before arrive. Beaches you can drive to, others you have to walk to, beautiful coastal and mountain scenery, excellent hiking and walking trails, welcoming but not butt-kissing locals filled with lots of characters joy to meet. It’s Greek but different, some spectacular beaches, Messakti Beach most popular north side Gialiskari resort pure natural golden sand crystal clear two small rivers freshwater lagoons church Gialiskaris visible jutting sea small island, Livadi Beach fine golden sand ideal young children between Armenistis and Messakti, Seychelles Beach relaxation family-friendly hidden gem soothing Aegean hidden gem Kalou Beach. Inviting nudist beach, pristine beaches, vibrant town Armenistis energetic charming streets local shops authentic cuisine, romantic atmosphere windsurfing kayaking tranquil marina. Ikaria is known as one of world’s famous Blue Zones where people live longer than most, island of immortals, sitting transfixed by lapping brilliant blue Aegean Sea island of gods and immortals what a way to go. Small diamond among Greek islands, amazing island. Best for off beaten path lovers peaceful small towns over glitzy beach resorts, hikers, Blue Zone curious, and those who’ve done big name over-the-top islands and want something real. Less ideal if you want constant exploring new things every hour, activities limited remote, don’t bring best dress bring torch far more useful.

Long way to slow down

No direct flights, but worth the journey. By air, Ikaria airport receives only domestic flights from Athens, flight time 50 min, 3 times week subsidised PSO barren islands winter, Olympic Air Monday Thursday Saturday Sky Express Sunday Monday Friday, more common daily summer, also flights Thessaloniki Astra Airlines. Flights UK via Athens with Aegean Airlines. By ferry, from Piraeus Athens about 7 hours to Evdilos north or Agios Kirykos south, Blue Star Ferries all year round, several times week. Hellenic Seaways run several services week between Mykonos and Evdilos north 2 hours, good for island hopping. From Samos about 1.5 hours good for eastern Aegean hopping. From nearby Paros and others also. Best time late May through early October perfect, most alive vibrant time June and September excellent warm quieter still some festivals lower prices, late May early October shoulder, August panigiri parties peak. I don’t recommend day trip, pretty big island need at least few nights. Getting around rent car, roads winding mountainous, base Armenistis north for beaches Messakti Livadi, or Agios Kirykos south for capital vibe high rust walls distinctive blue dome largest church. Bring cash, torch, hiking shoes, and patience for Ikarian time, things start when they start.
