Irakleia is the largest of the Small Cyclades but still only about 19 square kilometres, a quiet island of about 150 people between Naxos and Ios that you reach after a long ferry ride that makes you feel like you’ve slipped off the map. There are just two villages — Agios Georgios at the port where almost everything is, and Panagia inland with its old houses — connected by a single road and surrounded by terraced hills, wild sage, and a coastline of coves.
