Kastos

Kastos is the smallest inhabited Ionian island, a mere 6 square kilometres southeast of Lefkada with about 40 permanent residents and one village — Kastos — wrapped around a small, sheltered harbour that’s a favourite for yachties crossing from Lefkada to Ithaca. The island is low, covered in olive groves, and has no real roads beyond a couple of tracks, so you get around on foot or by boat.

It’s the ultimate escape: a couple of tavernas, rooms to rent, beaches like Fikí and Agios Emilianos that you’ll often have to yourself, and complete silence at night except for the halyards. Like its neighbour Kalamos, Kastos feels like the Ionian of the 1960s — no cars, no nightlife, just olive trees, goats, and water so clear you can see your anchor chain.

Kastos is the Ionian at its most back-to-basics. Found on the shores of south western Greece, surrounded by opal seas, boasting lush green hills, empty beaches, two quiet harbors and home to scarcely more than 50 permanent residents — though some say around 200 in summer. It’s the ideal place for those seeking to connect with nature, reconnect with slow life.

The tiny island has numerous anchorages with sandy beaches and rocky areas to explore with snorkel. The water is crystal clear, emerald. Only ten-minute walk from the port is the most popular beach on the island. Villas are environmentally-friendly style houses, sympathetic to rustic nature, steeped in discreet luxury, perfect for current back-to-basics lifestyle trend. The harbour area is the social centre, with tavernas and regular ferry arrivals providing rhythm of daily life.

You’ll love it if you want beautiful sandy beaches, turquoise water, great food, picturesque villages and hidden away from summer crowds. Late May till end September is pure magic if you want to escape crowds. Not for party seekers.

How to get here and get around

Mytikas is the closest port on mainland for Kastos. Best way to reach Kastos is land in Preveza, rent a vehicle and take ferry in Mytikas directly to Kastos. Mainland port of Mitikas is about 20 to 50 minute ferry ride from Kastos, in summer generally one crossing a day, six days a week.

There are also taxi boats that leave from Lefkada island before setting off for Kastos, especially high season — Lefkada to Kastos via Kalamos around 3h45m. You can take ferry from Kastos to Lefkada via Kalamos same time. Port Kastos main harbour offers safe mooring and several taverns, south bays perfect for nautical exploration and overnight mooring.

Kastos is relatively straightforward to reach by private boat or passenger ferry. No cars needed really, small enough villas within easy reach of harbour and main beaches. Bring cash, good books, snorkel.
