Kimolos is Milos’s quiet little sister, just a 20-minute boat ride northeast, a volcanic island of 36 square kilometres with about 700 residents and a pace that feels a decade slower. Its main village, Chorio, is a classic Cycladic hilltop of white houses and narrow alleys around a medieval Kastro, with its port Psathi below, and the whole island is known for its chalky white rock, pastel beaches, and a laid-back fishing life that hasn’t changed much.

The beaches are the draw — Prassa, with its blinding white pumice cliffs and shallow turquoise water, Aliki, Bonatsa, and Monastiria — plus Poliegos, the huge uninhabited islet next door with the bluest water in the Aegean, reachable only by boat. Kimolos is where you go when Milos feels too busy: a couple of tavernas, fresh ladotiri cheese, no clubs, no crowds, just wind, sea and that soft kimolia chalk that was once used for soap.

Getting there and island hopping

Best way from mainland is taking Aegean Sea Lines ferry from Piraeus — makes stops en route at Kythnos, Serifos, Sifnos, operates three or four times a week. After stopping at port of Psathi on Kimolos continues to Milos. There are 6-7 ferries from Piraeus to Kimolos every week throughout year. Ferry trip about 7-8 hours including stops, can be as fast as 3h25 direct. Seajets operates car ferry from Piraeus to Kimolos 6 times a week. Summer also ferry schedule from Lavrio.

Kimolos is right next to Milos island — connected by boat to Milos 1 hour, Sifnos 1-2.5 hours, Andros, Syros 4.5 hours, Ios, Kythnos 5 hours, Naxos, Paros, Santorini 4.20 hours, Serifos, Sikinos 2.10 hours, Tinos 4.40 hours and Folegandros. Milos to Kimolos ticket around £4 to £13, cheap day trip.

Owner Panagiotis says feeling of good old Greece — there will be visiting chefs and sound baths on most beautiful beaches. Near hotel Kalamitsa one of island’s best tavernas. Try local cuisine baked goods like ladenia and tirenia.
