Kythira

Kythira is an Ionian island that lies off the Peloponnese, south of the tip of Lakonia, where Ionian, Aegean and Cretan seas meet — geographically Ionian, but historically with a foot in Crete and Venice too. It’s 280 square kilometres of rolling hills, deep gorges, waterfalls at Mylopotamos, pine-covered valleys and cliff-top villages, with its capital Chora perched under a massive Venetian castle, and three small ports at Kapsali, Diakofti and Agia Pelagia.

The island is known for its wild, varied beaches like Kaladi, Melidoni and Lagada, its Venetian bridges and monasteries, and for its myth as the birthplace of Aphrodite, who rose from the foam nearby. Kythira feels remote, traditional, a bit melancholic and very Greek-Australian — many families here emigrated to Australia — with honey, olive oil, and a quiet, old-fashioned island life far from the Cycladic crowd.

This is for you if you want space, not a scene

If you are looking just for beautiful sandy beaches with easy access and wild nightlife then please look elsewhere. Kythira is amazing island combining mountain and sea vacations in one.

Life moves at its own pace, with fewer crowds and less urgency than more connected islands. Best for travelers who want distance from busy island routes and quieter overall experience. Suits people who enjoy uncrowded beaches, spread out villages, and days not built around schedules or nightlife. Appeals to visitors who like space, independence, and slower style travel where movement is intentional rather than constant.

There are number of beaches, not easily accessible though and not as great as other islands, usually crammed with people? Actually opposite — very nice beach no waves crystal clear water sandy but without perfect sand, absolutely stunning turquoise waters no big waves amazing to relax. Fishing villages, traditional apartments like Celestia preferably around center to south for easy access whole island. Stay two nights north Kythira Agia Pelagia and three south Keramoto.

Quiet but fascinating island. Perfect if you prefer intentional slow travel.

How to get there

Kythira sits off southern tip of Peloponnese, between mainland and Crete. From Athens two options.

Fly — Olympic Air and Sky Express fly Athens International Airport to Kythira KIT twice daily, about 59 minutes, average €47-105. Quickest.

Ferry — Seajets operates car ferry from Port of Piraeus to Kythira twice a week, 19:30 departure, from €22 average €19-27, most popular option among Omio users if prioritising price. Alternative via Neapoli in Peloponnese — bus from Athens to Neapoli about 7h54m then car ferry Neapoli to Kythira. Ferry also continues to Crete, Antikythera.

Rent car essential — island spread out, beaches not easily accessible.
