Kythnos
Kythnos is one of the closest Western Cyclades to Athens — 45 minutes from Lavrio — a dry, rolling island of 100 square kilometres shaped like a figure-of-eight, with bare hills, terraces, and about 70 sandy bays cut into its coastline. Its two main villages, Messaria (Kythnos Chora) with its red-tiled roofs, and Dryopida with its tiled streets and cave-like houses, are inland, a reminder of pirate times, while the ports of Merichas and Loutra below handle the ferries and fishermen.

The island is famous for Kolona Beach, where a thin sandbar connects Kythnos to the islet of Agios Loukas, creating two bays in one — perhaps the most photographed double beach in Greece — and for Loutra’s hot springs, used since antiquity. Kythnos is understated: no big resorts, just simple rooms, grilled fish, local cured meats, and locals who still farm — a perfect weekend island for hiking, swimming and that old Cycladic quiet.
