Lefkada
Lefkada is connected to the Greek mainland by a causeway and a floating bridge, making it the only Ionian island you can drive to, but its landscape feels pure island — 303 square kilometres dominated by the white cliffs that give it its name, from lefkada, white, and by some of Greece’s most dramatic beaches. On the west coast lie Porto Katsiki, Egremni and Kathisma, huge vertical drops of limestone ending in turquoise that looks more Caribbean than Mediterranean.

Lefkada Town sits on the northern lagoon, a colourful, earthquake-rebuilt capital of canals and wooden houses, with mountain villages like Karya inland preserving embroidery and lentils. It’s a windsurfing mecca at Vasiliki and Lefkada Lagoon, a sailing base for the islands to the south like Meganisi and Kefalonia, and an island that mixes mainland ease with Ionian wildness — green mountains, waterfalls at Nidri, and beaches that consistently rank among Europe’s best.
