Lipsi

Lipsi (Leipsoi) is a small Dodecanese island between Patmos and Leros, just 16 square kilometres, with a single town built around a sheltered natural harbour and hills dotted with little blue-domed churches. It’s green for the Dodecanese, low-lying and fertile, with 24 small churches and an important 17th-century monastery of Panagia tou Harou, where the icon of the Virgin is said to hold lilies that bloom and dry on their own.

The island lives off fishing, wine and a very gentle tourism — no airport, no big hotels, just sandy coves like Platis Gialos, Katsadia, Tourkomnima and Kampos, all walkable, and day boats to the islets of Aspronissia and Marathi. Lipsi feels like Patmos’s quiet sister: simple rooms, fish on the grill, kaiki boats bobbing in the harbour, and a sense that nothing has to happen too quickly.

Lipsi is family friendly island with excellent beaches all around where you can instantly unwind in truly relaxing ambience. Stunning 360 degree birds eye views from highest house, 4 terraces, stunning seaside views walking distance to all Lipsi has to offer restaurants port beach.

For travellers of certain age Lipsi is Greece 30 years ago — laid back, limited facilities, warm and welcoming. It’s small and has something like 20+ small beaches but about 6 main ones. 2 are quickly walkable from town in 5-15 minutes — Lientou town beach which also attracts Greek local children I’m told school has 83 and Kampos 5 minutes further opposite Lipsi Blue boutique hotel — but all beaches on island are walkable depending how much time you’re prepared to. Small beach but near town Lientou also known town beach proximity town of Lipsi.

Swim at sandy beaches, explore small islets near main island, join traditional taverna meal. Family friendly villa with parea, seaside views every angle.

Getting there

Routes and ferries to Lipsi — book tickets to Lipsi and sail from port of Piraeus with Blue Star Ferries journey about 8.30 hours stopping Patmos on way. You can also sail from Leros 40 mins, Kalymnos 1.30 hrs, Ikaria 1.35 hrs, Agathonisi 3 hrs, Fourni 1.50 hrs, Arki 1.55 hrs. Lipsi does not have daily connections ferries from Athens so you can get there either from Patmos or Leros. During summer once week connection with Mykonos ferry Milena from Leros.

Geographically islands lie order Kos-Leros-Lipsi-Patmos, ferries don’t double back much. Sensible either travel to Patmos first and work south back towards Leros, or start at Leros and work north to Patmos returning direct to Kos. Leros to Lipsi direct ferry departing Port Leros arriving Port Lipsi, Saonisos Saos Ferries, Dodekanisos Pride, Blue Star Patmos. Patmos to Lipsi 30 minutes.
