Poros

Poros is a small Saronic island, just 31 square kilometres, separated from the Peloponnese by a narrow 200-metre channel opposite the town of Galatas. It is actually two islands joined by a bridge, Sphairia which is the volcanic port town, and Kalavria which is larger, green with pine forests and lemon groves, topped by the iconic clock tower above the harbour.

Despite its small size it has a long history, with the Temple of Poseidon where Demosthenes poisoned himself in 322 BC, and the 18th-century Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi in the pines. A popular weekend escape from Athens at just an hour by hydrofoil, Poros has small beaches like Love Bay and Askeli, a lively waterfront, and a mix of neoclassical captains’ houses and pine-covered hills.

The twin island in the Saronic Gulf — 58km from Athens

Poros, Greek Πόρος, is a small Greek island-pair in the southern part of the Saronic Gulf, about 58 km or 36 miles, 31 nautical miles south from Athens’ port of Piraeus and separated from the Peloponnese by a 200-metre wide sea channel, with town of Galatas on mainland across strait. The name comes from narrow channel or poros.

It actually comprises two islands totaling 9 square miles or 23 square kilometres, the larger wooded limestone island of Kalavria, and Sphairia with town. Other listings: spans roughly 31 km2 including two islets and slice of nearby mainland Kyani Akti, and small island with area 33 km2 situated 26 miles south of Athens less than a mile from NE coast of Peloponnese. Poros is an island with rich vegetation — much of northern and far eastern/western sides bushy, whereas large areas of old pine forest are found in south and center. Town of Poros has 4,102 inhabitants. With neoclassical town amphitheatrically built around hillside clock tower, ancient sanctuaries, lemon groves and crystal-blue bays.

This is for you if you want charming less-touristed alternative to busy Cyclades, close to Athens.

FYI — why it matters, who it’s for, and what people get wrong

Poros is not isolated — its unique geography with close proximity to mainland makes it extremely accessible and picturesque. People think you must fly — you don’t. There are 30 weekly ferries, 4 times a day, with Hellenic Seaways operating from Port of Piraeus. Average sailing 1h 5m, fastest 55 minutes, conventional 2h35m at €17, high-speed 1h15m at €29-€36. First ferry 08:00, last 20:10 from Piraeus, return first 08:15, last 21:40 from Poros. You can also take KTEL Argolidas bus from Athens Kifisou to Galatas 2h30m for €14-€18 then water-taxi across 200m channel. On island you walk, bike or boat — pine forests, olive groves, lemon groves and clock tower views. Not for wild partying or large Cycladic beaches, but for quick escape from Athens with island feel.
