Spetses

Spetses is a small island at the entrance to the Argolic Gulf, 22 square kilometres of pine-covered hills with no large hills, 3 kilometres off the Peloponnesian coast near Porto Heli, with Spetses Town as its only real settlement strung along the waterfront. Car-free in spirit — private cars are restricted and transport is by horse-drawn carriage, bike and water taxi — it has a neat, manicured look with large captains’ mansions, pebble courtyards and pine forests meeting the sea at beaches like Agia Paraskevi and Zogeria.

Famous for its role in the Greek War of Independence as a major naval power under Laskarina Bouboulina, whose mansion is now a museum, Spetses retains an aristocratic, old-Athenian resort feel. Known for its September Armata festival reenacting the 1822 naval battle, its elegant hotels like the Poseidonion, and as a weekend escape for Athenians, it is more cosmopolitan and pine-scented than barren Aegean islands further south.

Spetses is the southernmost island of the Saronic Gulf and the southernmost of the Saronic Islands or Argo-Saronic Islands at the entrance of the Argolic Gulf, off the eastern coast of Peloponnese near Porto Cheli, 51 nautical miles from Piraeus. It is a small attractive pine-clad island with a lovely town of two-storey neoclassical houses and narrow stone-paved alleys, with rugged coastline with numerous beaches, rocky coves and lush pine forests, hills providing stunning views of Aegean Sea. Area about 22 square kilometers or 8.5 square miles, also listed as 25.5 km2, 27 square kilometres about 10 square miles, with sole road tracing perimeter measuring 24 km in length.

Population numbers around 4,000, 4,100 mainly in town, 4,027 in Spetses Town which spreads over area around 4 km along coast. Capital Spetses Town, main settlement Dapia harbour area. Highest point Profitis Elias. It is independent municipality including small uninhabited islands of Spetsopoula, Falkonera and Velopoula. In ancient times island called Pityousa which means pine-covered, and name comes from Venetian Isola di Spezzie meaning island of scents due to dense pine forests.

This is for you if you want aristocratic character, car-free calmness and elegant harbor with boutiques, tavernas and horse-drawn carriages. It is not for cars; no private automobiles allowed within town limits, transport walking, bicycles, mopeds, motorcycles and carriages.

Bouboulina’s navy, gold in wells and why pine scent still names it
