Thassos

Thassos is a large island in the northern Aegean, 380 square kilometres just off the coast of Kavala, one of the greenest Greek islands with mountains covered in pine and olive rising to 1,204 metres at Ypsario. Circular and compact, its coast road links its main port Thassos Town, also called Limenas, with villages like Panagia and Potos and marble and honey-coloured beaches such as Paradise Beach and Marble Beach.

Famous since antiquity for its gold mines and white marble — Thasian marble was prized throughout the ancient world — Thassos is known today for its forests, traditional mountain villages, and ancient sites including the agora of Thassos and the monastery of Archangel Michael. More developed for family tourism than many Aegean islands, it remains lush and water-rich, with waterfalls, plane trees and a distinct northern Greek character.
