Secret Greek islands
Secret Greek islands are for that thrill of feeling like you’re in on something not everyone knows about, with uncrowded harbours, quiet beaches, and villages where life ticks along much as it always has, away from the well-promoted routes and the constant stream of day-trippers.

This guide compares each island based on tourism levels, atmosphere, accessibility, and seclusion to find places that still feel genuinely under the radar, where you can settle in for a few days rather than just ticking off a hidden beach for an afternoon.
| Island | Description |
|---|---|
| Ro | No residents, no ferry, no water, a lighthouse rock west of Kastellorizo where Despina Achladioti raised the flag alone for decades. |
| Strongyli | Easternmost Greek land, volcanic cone east of Kastellorizo, no beach, no path, off-limits to visitors. |
| Kinaros | One resident between Amorgos and Kalymnos, no pier, supplies arrive by fishing boat when weather allows. |
| Levitha | Two residents on a family-owned island, one taverna for sailors, no shop, no public transport, central Aegean gap. |
| Antipsara | Zero residents near Psara, flat and treeless, no ferry, not even on most ferry maps. |
| Gyaros | Zero residents, former political prison island, restricted access, concrete ruins and total silence near Andros. |
| Polyaigos | Largest uninhabited Cycladic islet, white cliffs and wild goats, no ferry, no beach bar near Milos. |
| Despotiko | Uninhabited islet near Antiparos, active excavation, no infrastructure, turquoise water with no one in it. |
| Keros | Sacred Cycladic islet where Cycladic figurines were found, landing forbidden without permit, no beach organization. |
| Saria | North of Karpathos, uninhabited with a ruined monastery and falcons, reachable only by chartered caique. |
| Alimia | Deep natural harbor between Halki and Rhodes, yachts hide here, no village, no taverna, just a ruined castle. |
| Saliagos | Tiny rock between Paros and Antiparos, no soil, no landing, visible from the ferry but never visited. |
| Agios Minas | Monastery islet near Fournoi, three monks, bells and goats, no public ferry. |
| Agios Georgios | Unnamed rock off Attica, zero residents, no name on most charts, known only to fishermen. |
| Makronisos | Long former prison island near Kea, ruins and barbed wire history, no development. |
| Rineia | Next to Mykonos yet empty, ancient necropolis and wild beaches, day boats pass but rarely stop. |
| Nea Kameni | Active volcano in Santorini caldera, black lava and sulfur vents, no overnight stay. |
| Palea Kameni | Older volcanic cone with hot springs, no buildings, you swim to it from a boat. |
| Patroklos | Tiny islet off Sounion, no residents, no ferry, known to divers for clear water. |
| Proti | Forested off Pylos, uninhabited, no paths, pine trees down to the sea. |
Who it suits and why
Best for travellers who want to feel like they’ve discovered something for themselves. These islands suit those who prefer tiny harbours, home-cooked taverna food, and beaches you walk to down a dirt track. It’s about quiet days and authentic local life rather than a holiday scene.
Less suited to those who want choice, service, and organisation. If you want boutique hotels, beach clubs with sunbed service, shopping, or a menu of boat trips and guided tours every day, you will be better off on a more established island.
What to keep in mind
Secret means less infrastructure. Most of these islands have no airport and are reached by infrequent ferries from Athens or a neighbouring island, often with only 2-3 sailings a week. In shoulder season, services drop further and cancellations due to wind are more common.
Once there, things are very simple. You will find family-run rooms rather than hotels with reception, one or two mini-markets instead of supermarkets, and limited ATMs and medical facilities. A rental car or scooter is usually essential, and most beaches have no sunbeds, bars, or water sports, just sea and sand.
