What to keep in mind

Hidden usually means harder access and fewer facilities. Many of these islands have no airport and rely on infrequent ferries, which can be cancelled in high winds, especially outside June to September. There are often no direct flights from the UK at all, so you will need to connect via Athens and allow an overnight stay.

On the island, expect limited infrastructure. ATMs can run out of cash, the single pharmacy or petrol station may keep short hours, and accommodation is often simple studios rather than hotels with daily service. Most beaches have no sunbeds or water sports, and a car or scooter is usually essential to get around.
