Unknown Greek islands
Unknown Greek islands are for when you want to feel like you’ve stepped off the map completely, trading famous views for quiet harbours, empty beaches, and villages where you’re more likely to be surrounded by locals than other travellers, even in the height of summer.

This guide compares each island based on tourism levels, name recognition, accessibility, and atmosphere to find places that still feel genuinely unknown, with enough going on for a relaxed stay, not just a dot on the ferry timetable you can barely reach.
| Island | Description |
|---|---|
| Ro | Zero residents, no ferry, no port code, uninhabited rock west of Kastellorizo known only for Lady of Ro, not on any ferry map, makes it highly unknown. |
| Strongyli | Easternmost Greek territory, volcanic cone east of Kastellorizo with no landing and no path, Greece’s easternmost point but no guide mentions it, makes it highly unknown. |
| Kinaros | Small rocky island of only 4½ km2 between Cyclades and Dodecanese west of Kalymnos and Leros and east of Amorgos, one resident living like Robinson Crusoe, makes it highly unknown. |
| Levitha | Two residents on private family island, one seasonal taverna for sailors, no shop, no public transport, remote islands are difficult to get to, makes it highly unknown. |
| Antipsara | Zero residents near Psara, flat and treeless, no ferry, not on most ferry maps, no Wikipedia ferry schedule, makes it highly unknown. |

| Rineia | Next to Mykonos yet empty, ancient necropolis and wild beaches, day boats pass but rarely stop, overshadowed so no info, makes it highly unknown. |
| Nea Kameni | Active volcano in Santorini caldera, black lava and sulfur vents, no overnight stay allowed, uninhabited volcanic rock, makes it highly unknown as residential island. |

Who it suits and why
Best for travellers who want to feel completely away from the tourist route. These islands suit those who are content with a single harbour village, a few tavernas where owners cook what they caught, and beaches reached by footpath or dirt road. Ideal for slow travel and total disconnection.
Less suited to those who want convenience and choice. If you want hotels with pools and reception, beach service, shopping, or lots of tours and boat hire options, you will have a better time on a more well-known island.
What to keep in mind
Unknown means hard to get to and thinly serviced. Most have no airport at all and rely on infrequent ferries, often only 2 to 3 times a week from Athens or a larger neighbour. Sailings are long, often 6 to 11 hours, and can be cancelled in high winds, especially outside July and August.
Facilities are minimal. Accommodation is usually simple family-run rooms rather than hotels, and ATMs, pharmacies and petrol may be limited to one in the port that can run out or close early. You will almost certainly need your own vehicle, and beaches are almost entirely unorganised with no sunbeds, bars, or water sports.
