Greek party islands to avoid

Greek party islands to avoid

Greek party islands to avoid are islands where summer revolves around non-stop nightlife, where main strips throb with loud bars, where beaches are lined with speakers by day and queues for clubs by night, and where quiet swims and early dinners get drowned out by crowds chasing shots and DJs.

They are islands where the party spills into every corner, with packed alleys, pricey drinks, thumping bass until sunrise and that restless, overstimulated feeling that makes it hard to find a calm cove or a peaceful taverna when you want one.

Who it suits and why

Best for travellers who want to skip the thumping bass and find the quieter side of Greece. These islands to avoid if you want peace are Mykonos for Paradise and Super Paradise beach clubs, Ios for Mylopotas and Far Out Beach Club, Zakynthos for Laganas strip, plus Crete’s Malia and Hersonissos, Kos’s Kardamena, Corfu’s Kavos and Rhodes’ Faliraki. They suit party seekers, but if you want calm, you will want to steer clear of their main beaches and strips from mid June to August.

Less suited to those who actually want big nights. If you want DJs till 6am, pub crawls, foam parties and a crowd aged 18 to 25 in July, avoiding these islands will feel too sleepy, so pick them instead. For quiet seekers, avoiding these means choosing nearby islands like Paros over Mykonos or Paxos over Corfu.

What to keep in mind

Even party islands have quiet corners but timing matters. Laganas, Malia, Kavos, Faliraki, Kardamena and Mylopotas peak 15 June to 31 August when bars play loud until 4am and sunbeds can be 40 euro plus with minimum spends. If you are booked there, stay in the old town or north coast 10 to 15 minutes drive away, not on the strip.

On the ground check location before you book. Look at hotel maps away from Paradise Beach Mykonos, Mylopotas Ios, Laganas Zakynthos, Malia Crete and Kavos Corfu, read recent reviews for noise after midnight, and travel in May, early June or September when clubs are quieter or closed. Taxis after 1am are scarce and pricey, so if you end up nearby, use earplugs and pre booked transfers.
