Best Greek islands for turtles
Best Greek islands for turtles are islands where loggerhead nesting beaches are protected and respected, where long sandy bays stay dark and quiet at night in summer, where clear, seagrass-rich waters give you a real chance to see turtles gliding while swimming, and where local groups watch over nests and hatchlings.

They are islands where the coastline still feels wild enough for ancient rituals to continue, with early-morning tracks in the sand, low-key boat trips that keep distance, and that rare, hopeful feeling of sharing the beach with one of the Mediterranean’s most iconic marine residents.
| Island | Description |
|---|---|
| Zakynthos | The centre for turtles in Greece, with Laganas Bay, Marathonisi island, and Golden Nesting Beach forming the National Marine Park where loggerheads nest and boat trips guarantee sightings. |
| Kefalonia | Rare loggerhead turtles find refuge around Argostoli Bay, where friendly individuals often approach fishing boats in shallow water. |
| Corfu | Shallow waters between Corfu, Kefalonia, and Zakynthos confine loggerheads, with nesting on southern beaches like Issos and Marathias. |
| Crete | Rethymno, Elafonisi, and Matala are all documented nesting beaches, supported by local rescue centres for hatchlings. |
| Rhodes | Prasonisi and the southern coastline around Gennadi see regular visits, with conservation patrols during nesting season. |
| Kos | Tigaki and Marmari have seasonal nesting with tracks visible at dawn in early summer. |
| Lefkada | Calm Ionian channels around Meganisi and Kalamos where turtles are confined and often spotted by sailors. |
| Meganisi | Part of the Inner Ionian study area where loggerheads share waters with dolphins. |
| Paxos & Antipaxos | Waters where turtles are regularly seen alongside bottlenose and common dolphins. |
| Kea | Quiet southern beaches with low light pollution that provide undisturbed nesting conditions. |
| Naxos | Aliko and Plaka area in the southwest has recorded nesting thanks to limited development. |
| Elafonisos | Small island with protected dunes that serve as an important nesting ground off the Peloponnese. |
Who it suits and why
Best for travellers who want wild encounters with their beach time. These islands suit those who love early boats, glassy seas and respectful watching – headed by Zakynthos for loggerhead Caretta caretta turtles nesting in Laganas Bay, plus Kefalonia, Crete, Rhodes, Kos and Corfu for regular sightings. Ideal if you want snorkelling over seagrass meadows, sunset trips with marine guides, and the chance to see hatchlings in July to October.
Less suited to those who want guaranteed touching or party beaches all day. If you dislike early starts, quiet observation, bumpy boat rides or strict rules like no night access and no sunbeds on nesting beaches, or you expect to swim right up to turtles, these islands will feel too regulated and too patient.
What to keep in mind
Turtles are seasonal and protected. Nesting is May to August with hatchlings July to October, centred on Zakynthos National Marine Park where Laganas, Kalamaki and Sekania have night bans and wardened nests. Kefalonia around Argostoli and Mounda, southern Crete at Rethymno and Chania, and southern Kos at Kefalos have similar protections. All have direct UK flights of 3 to 4.5 hours May to October or ferries of 1 to 6 hours from Athens.
On the ground book responsibly. Choose licensed marine park boats that keep 15 metres distance and never chase or circle, do not use white lights or flash on beaches at night, avoid anchoring on seagrass, and bring reef safe sunscreen, binoculars and water shoes as nesting beaches are often unshaded and pebbly. High winds in July and August can cancel boat trips, so leave buffer days.
