Ideal if you want early morning walks, snorkelling over seagrass, and evenings logging what you saw.

Less suited to those who want guaranteed sightings and zoo style encounters. If you dislike early starts, quiet watching, bumpy boat trips or strict rules around nests and caves, or you want wildlife laid on daily, these nature led islands will feel too seasonal and too patient.

What to keep in mind

Wildlife is best in the shoulders and needs respect. Zakynthos turtles nest May to August with protected beaches at Laganas Bay where night access is banned, Alonissos monk seals pup in September and October, and Lesvos bird migration peaks April to May and September. Many islands have direct UK flights of 3 to 4.5 hours May to October or ferries of 2 to 8 hours from Athens.

On the ground book responsibly and prepare. Choose licensed marine park boats, keep 15 metres from seals and turtles, do not use flash or white lights on nesting beaches, and bring binoculars, reef safe sunscreen and walking shoes. Sites are often unshaded with uneven paths, and high winds in July and August can cancel wildlife boat trips.
