Ideal if you want gentle company, photogenic alleyways, and evenings feeding and fussing cats that choose you.
Less suited to those with strong allergies or who dislike animals around food. If you want pristine resorts with no strays, silent nights without meowing, or you expect a formal cat sanctuary everywhere, these cat filled islands will feel too furry and too free roaming.
What to keep in mind
Cats are everywhere but cared for unevenly. Syros has one of Greece’s largest neutered colonies in Ermoupoli, Hydra and Mykonos cats are famously friendly as cars are limited, and Corfu and Rhodes have active volunteer feeding stations. All have ferries of 1 to 6 hours from Athens and many have direct UK flights of 3 to 4.5 hours May to October, with Hydra and Syros reached via Athens.
On the ground be kind and practical. Do not feed milk or raw fish, offer fresh water in summer heat, avoid picking up kittens, and consider donating to local groups like Syros Cats or Nine Lives Greece. Bring antihistamines if sensitive, keep food covered on balconies, and visit in spring or early autumn when cats are less heat stressed and harbours are quieter.
