Best Greek islands for diving
Best Greek islands for diving are islands where the world drops away beneath the boat, where reefs, wrecks and walls start just offshore, where visibility runs deep and blue and every descent feels like entering a new landscape.

They are islands where diving shapes the day, with dive schools in the harbour, caves and canyons to explore, turtles and rays gliding past and harbourside tavernas waiting after, and that weightless, ear-popping feeling of surfacing into sun and salt with stories from below.

Who it suits and why
Best for travellers who want to go below snorkel depth. Best Greek islands for diving suit certified divers, wreck hunters and wall drop lovers – headed by Zakynthos for Keri Caves tunnels, Marathonisi turtle cleaning stations and Mizithres blue walls 5 to 30m, Crete for Elounda WW2 wrecks, Elephant Cave white stalactites and Chania drop offs, Rhodes for Lindos sea caves, Afandou artificial reef and Anthony Quinn Bay training bays, Corfu for Paleokastritsa caverns and Liapades reefs 12 to 40m, Milos for Kleftiko caves and Sarakiniko lava tubes only by dive boat, plus Santorini for Caldera volcanic walls and Thirassia reef 25 to 35m visibility, and Paros for Monastiri and Blue Lagoon beginner to advanced. Ideal if you want cave light rays, wrecks and 20 to 30m viz not just beach swim.
Less suited to those who want only shallow beach dips with no kit. If you want Naxos Plaka ankle deep wade and Mykonos beach club till 6am, diving islands with 8am boat, 60 to 90 euro two tank dives, PADI medical forms and surface intervals will feel too early and kit heavy.
What to keep in mind
Diving in Greece is regulated and boat based. Zakynthos, Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, Milos, Santorini, Paros have direct UK flights 3 hours 10 to 4 hours 30 May to October or via Athens 45 to 75 minutes, plus ferries Piraeus to Milos Paros Santorini 2 to 7 hours 40 to 95 euro. Dive season April to November, best June to September sea 22 to 27 degrees, air 26 to 32. Most centres run 9am and 2pm boats, two tank day 70 to 110 euro, discover scuba 60 to 80 euro, PADI Open Water 350 to 450 euro 3 days. Greek law bans dive below 40m recreational, night dive with guide only, no artefact removal.
On the ground pick base near marina. Stay Laganas or Keri Zakynthos for cave boats, Elounda or Chania Crete for wrecks and caves, Kolymbia or Lindos Rhodes for bay training, Paleokastritsa Corfu for caverns, Adamas Milos for lava tubes, Akrotiri Santorini for caldera walls, Aliki Paros for sheltered Monastiri. Book 1 day ahead July to August, bring logbook and certification card, rash vest and reef safe sunscreen, hire car 25 to 45 euro day for centre hop and go early June or late September for 26 to 28 degrees, sea 24 to 26 and fewer dive boats on site than August peak.
