Best for travellers who want more than just a sunbed. Less suited to those who want total stillness with no plan. If you want only infinity pool and no early starts, islands with surf schools, gorge hikes at 6am and boat trips in wind will feel too organised and busy.

What to keep in mind

Activity islands need season and gear planning. Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, Zakynthos and Lefkada have direct UK flights 3 hours 10 to 4 hours 30 May to October, Naxos, Paros, Milos have 3 to 5 hour ferries from Piraeus 40 to 85 euro with SeaJets and Blue Star. Samaria Gorge Crete open May to October entry 5 euro, need 5 to 7 hours, windsurf and kitesurf best June to September with meltemi 15 to 25 knots, kayak and snorkel May to October sea 20 to 27 degrees, scuba certified 18m plus.

On the ground book activities day before in August. Reserve kayak and boat trips for morning calm, windsurf afternoons for wind, hike gorges 6am to 11am to avoid heat, wear reef shoes for Milos and Zakynthos pebbly entries, carry cash 20 to 60 euro per activity, and choose base near activity – Chania for Samaria, Vasiliki for Lefkada windsurf, Mikri Vigla for Naxos kitesurf, Adamas for Milos kayaks. Check wind cancellation for small boats and visit June or September for active weather without August crowds.
