The best Greek islands for backpackers suit people who want ferries not transfers, small rooms above tavernas, and beaches that cost nothing to enjoy. It’s led by Paros and Naxos, because they are the perfect hub. You get hostels and cheap studios in Parikia, Naoussa and Naxos Chora, daily ferries to tiny islands, free walks to Kolymbithres granite boulders and Portara sunset temple, and windsurf watching at Pounda, Golden Beach and Mikri Vigla that’s free entertainment all afternoon. Crete is brilliant if you want one big island to roam, with backpacker hostels in Chania and Heraklion, buses to Elounda, Balos Lagoon and Samaria Gorge, cheap harbour souvlaki, and kayak and e-bike rentals by the day. Milos is ideal if you want wild and affordable, with campsites near Adamas, boat-share trips to Kleftiko sea caves for 40 to 70 euro, and Sarakiniko white cliffs for sunrise photos that cost nothing. Lefkada and Corfu are perfect for green and easy backpacking, with no ferry needed for Lefkada as you drive over the causeway, campsites and hostels in Nidri, Vasiliki and Kassiopi, and cheap day sails to Meganisi and Paxos with swim stops every hour. Rhodes and Kos give you history on a budget, with old town hostels in Rhodes Town and Kos Town, bikes for a few euro to reach Anthony Quinn Bay and Therma hot springs, and night ferries onward to smaller Dodecanese islands. It’s less suited to you if you want five star hotels and a private pool every night. What to keep in mind
Backpacking in Greece is all about ferries, beds and timing it just off peak. Most of these islands have direct UK flights from May to October, around three hours ten to four hours thirty, or a quick hop via Athens, and ferries from Piraeus are usually two to nine hours and 40 to 95 euro, with short hops between nearby islands 15 to 40 euro if you book a couple of days ahead. May to June and September to early October is the sweet spot. You get 22 to 28 degrees, sea temps of 22 to 25, dorm beds for 20 to 35 euro and basic studios for 45 to 75 euro, and quieter ferries where you can grab a deck ticket. July and August is fun but full, with midday hitting 30 to 35 degrees and hostels booking out fast. On the ground, base yourself near port and beach. Parikia or Naoussa in Paros and Chora or Agios Georgios in Naxos for hubs and cheap stays, Chania or Heraklion in Crete for hostels and bus links, Adamas or Pollonia in Milos for campsites and boat shares, Nidri or Vasiliki in Lefkada and Kassiopi or Corfu Town in Corfu for green, easy backpacking, and Rhodes Town or Lindos in Rhodes and Kos Town or Mastichari in Kos for history and beach. A dorm is usually 20 to 35 euro, a studio 45 to 75 euro, a souvlaki 3 to 5 euro, a small boat share half day 40 to 70 euro, and bike hire 8 to 12 euro a day. Bring a light pack, trainers and flip flops, a dry bag, a padlock for lockers, and a refillable bottle. Book your first night and your onward ferry in August, travel early or late to dodge heat, and go in early June or mid September when you get warm seas, empty coves and cheaper beds rather than full August queues on the quay.
