The best Greek islands for photography suit people who want to be out at sunrise and sunset, find clean lines and texture, and come home with shots that look different from everyone else’s. It’s led by Milos, because it’s basically a natural studio. You get Sarakiniko white moonscape at dawn, Kleftiko sea caves by boat with electric blue water, fishermen’s syrmata boat garages in Klima and Mandrakia, and rust red cliffs at Paleochori that glow at sunset. Paros and Naxos are perfect if you love white-and-blue minimal, with Naoussa harbour and Kolymbithres granite boulders in Paros, and the Portara temple at sunset and the sugar-cube lanes of Apeiranthos in Naxos. Lefkada is brilliant for green and turquoise, with Lefkas Town lagoon, Nidri bay, and the long lens from above Porto Katsiki and Egremni beaches where you get those stacked blues. Corfu gives you lush, layered landscapes, with Kassiopi coves, Kaiser’s Throne above Pelekas for huge sunsets, and Venetian architecture in Corfu Town for street and detail shots. Photography in Greece is all about timing, wind, and getting a little off the main drag. May to June and September to early October is the sweet spot. July and August is still great but it’s harsh by midday, 30 to 35 degrees, and the meltemi can build to 20 to 35 knots in the afternoon in Paros, Naxos and Milos, which is good for dramatic skies but tricky for drones and boat stability. On the ground, base yourself where you can walk to a sunrise spot and boat to another. Adamas or Pollonia in Milos for Sarakiniko and Kleftiko, Parikia or Naoussa in Paros for harbour and Kolymbithres, Chora or Apollonas in Naxos for Portara and villages, Nidri or Lefkas Town in Lefkada for lagoon and cliff beaches, Kassiopi or Corfu Town in Corfu for coves and old town, Elounda or Chania in Crete for causeway and harbour light, and Lindos in Rhodes or Oia in Santorini for iconic overlooks. Bring a wide lens for caves and lanes, a 70 to 200 for cliff beaches, a polariser for white rock and water, and a small tripod for blue hour harbours. Book boat trips for early or late light in summer, check drone rules as many archaeological sites are no-fly, keep mornings for exteriors and midday for details and interiors, and go in early June or mid September when you get warm seas, clean light and empty streets rather than full August crowds in every shot.
