Best Greek islands for swimming and food

Best Greek islands for swimming and food are islands where the sea and the table share the day, where you swim in clear coves until you’re hungry, then sit down to grilled octopus, fresh tomatoes, warm bread and olive oil just steps from the sand.

They are islands where appetite comes easy, with beach tavernas, harbour meze bars, family kitchens and sunset restaurants, and that perfect, sun-kissed feeling of salty skin, cold wine and plates that keep coming long after the last swim.

Who it suits and why

Best for travellers who time their swims around lunch. Best Greek islands for swimming and food suit beach and taverna lovers, couples and food led families – headed by Crete for Elafonisi pink lagoon, Balos shallow plus dakos, kalitsounia and Heraklion harbour seafood, Naxos for Plaka and Agios Prokopios 3km shallow plus Naxos graviera, potatoes and kitron distillery, Paros for Kolymbithres granite pools and Golden Beach plus Naoussa octopus and gouna, Milos for Sarakiniko white pools and Kleftiko boat plus pitarakia and Pollonia fish, Sifnos for Vathi and Faros sheltered bays plus chickpea revithada, mastelo and pottery village slow food, plus Syros for Galissas shallow and Ermoupoli loukoumi, halva pie and ouzo meze. Ideal if you want morning dip, long taverna lunch 20m from sea and sunset swim.

Less suited to those who want strip eating and all night clubs only. If you want Malia Crete 50 bars till 4am, Laganas Zakynthos burger bars and Faliraki kebab strip, swimming and food islands with farm cheese, clay pot slow cooking 4 hours and last kitchen 10pm will feel too slow and traditional.

What to keep in mind

Swim and food islands need beach and taverna timing. Crete, Naxos, Paros, Milos have direct UK flights 3 hours 10 to 4 hours 30 May to October or via Athens 45 to 75 minutes, Sifnos and Syros via Piraeus ferry 2 to 5 hours 40 to 85 euro. Sea 22 to 24 June, 24 to 27 July to September best for long swims, May and October 19 to 21 cooler. Tavernas busiest 1pm to 3pm and 8pm to 10pm, beach cantinas 10am to 6pm. Crete and Naxos cheese pies 4 to 7 euro, grilled fish 15 to 25 euro kg, Sifnos revithada Sundays only many spots.

On the ground swim where food is close. Base Aliki Paros for Kolymbithres plus seafood row, Plaka Naxos for shallow and tavernas on sand, Elounda or Chania Crete for lagoon plus harbour fish, Pollonia Milos for boat trips and fish tavernas, Vathi Sifnos for bay plus slow food tavernas, Ermoupoli Syros for town swim and market. Carry reef shoes for Milos pebble entries, book seafront taverna sunset table 1 day ahead August, boats morning 9am to 11am 30 to 50 euro for calm, hire car 25 to 45 euro day for farm visits, and go June or September for 26 to 28 degrees air, sea 24 to 26 and no queue for tables versus August full.
