Who it suits and why
Best for travellers who want a safe bet that still feels Greek. These islands suit those who love a balance of pretty harbours, good local tavernas, swimmable beaches and just enough to do without feeling overbuilt. Ideal if you want an easy trip that still feels rewarding and not too touristy.
Less suited to those who want total escape or total scene. If you want completely untouched pebble coves with no one else around and only one taverna open, or you want big party beach clubs, luxury resorts and designer shopping from morning to night, you will want to go more remote or more famous.
What to keep in mind
Recommended islands are popular for a reason, so timing matters. Most have good connections with short ferries of 1 to 4 hours from Athens or direct UK flights of 3 to 4 hours in summer from May to October, but July and August is busy and prices rise sharply.
On the island things are easy but not unlimited. Accommodation ranges from guesthouses to mid-range hotels and small boutique stays, and while buses, taxis and hire cars exist they still need booking ahead in high season. Popular beaches have sunbeds and beach bars but get crowded by midday, and you may still need a boat or car to find quieter coves, with shops and ATMs mainly in the main towns.
