Best Greek islands for fishing

Best Greek islands for fishing

Best Greek islands for fishing are islands where boats go out before sunrise, where harbours smell of nets and salt, where rocky points, reefs and deep blue drops mean sea bream at noon and octopus hanging to dry by evening.

They are islands where fishing sets the rhythm, with dawn lines, midday swims while you wait, cleaning catch on the quay and grilling it two hours later with lemon and wild herbs, and that patient, sun-lined, sea-fed feeling of eating what the island gave you that morning.

Who it suits and why

This is for travellers who want early mornings, quiet water, and a proper Greek taverna story at the end of the day. The best Greek islands for fishing suit people who love small-boat days, learning from a local skipper, and eating what you catch right by the harbour. It’s led by Lefkada and the Ionian, because the water is flat, sheltered and forgiving. You leave Nidri or Vasiliki at first light, fish around Meganisi, Kastos, Kalamos and Ithaca for sea bream, sea bass and squid, with lots of sheltered bays to anchor for a swim in between. Corfu is brilliant at the top of that chain too, with reef edges off Kassiopi and down to Paxos and Antipaxos that are great for jigging and light spinning, plus traditional kaiki boats you can join. Paros and Naxos give you classic Cycladic fishing, with early morning lines off Parikia, Naoussa, Piso Livadi and Apollonas, then lunch in a harbour taverna where the catch goes straight on the grill. Milos is all about boat days, with trips to Polyaigos, Kimolos and Kleftiko sea caves where you can bottom fish over volcanic reefs and snorkel the same clear water in the afternoon. Crete is perfect if you want variety, with charter fishing from Elounda, Agios Nikolaos and Chania for larger pelagics like tuna and bonito offshore, and easy shore fishing in Mirabello Bay at sunset. Rhodes works well too, especially around Lindos and Anthony Quinn Bay, where local skippers run relaxed half day trips that mix fishing with swimming stops. It’s perfect if you want sunrise starts, calm seas, hands-on learning from local fishermen, and a slow afternoon. It’s less suited to you if you want to party till 6am. Fishing is a dawn game, so if your holiday is all Mykonos beach clubs all night, you’ll miss the best bite every time.

What to keep in mind

Fishing in Greece is about going with a local, respecting the small-boat rules, and picking the calm season. Most of these islands have direct UK flights from May to October, around three hours ten to four hours thirty, or a quick hop via Athens, and ferries from Piraeus are usually two to nine hours and 40 to 95 euro. May to June and September to early October is the sweet spot. You get 22 to 28 degrees, sea temps of 22 to 25, light morning winds of 10 to 15 knots, and much quieter harbours. July and August is still doable but midday hits 30 to 35 degrees and the meltemi can build to 20 to 35 knots in the afternoon in Paros, Naxos and Milos, which makes small boats bumpy, while Lefkada, Corfu and Crete’s sheltered bays stay calmer. On the ground, base yourself near a working harbour. Nidri or Lefkas Town in Lefkada, Kassiopi in Corfu, Parikia or Naoussa in Paros, Apollonas or Agios Georgios in Naxos, Adamas or Pollonia in Milos, Elounda or Chania in Crete, and Lindos or Mandraki in Rhodes. A shared fishing trip is usually 60 to 90 euro per person for a half day, a private small boat with skipper 250 to 450 euro, and most include basic rods, lures and a swim stop. You don’t need a licence to fish with a local charter, but solo shore fishing has limits on nets and spearfishing, so it’s easiest to go with a licensed local. Bring a cap, light layers, polarised sunglasses, and a dry bag for your phone. Book a day ahead in August, aim to leave at sunrise and be back for lunch, keep some cash for harbour tavernas, and go in early June or mid September when you get warm seas, flat mornings and empty bays rather than full August queues on the quay.
