They are islands where golf sets the pace, with early tee times before the heat, long lunches overlooking the green and sunset swims after the last hole, and that clipped, sun-polished, quietly smug feeling of having found golf where few expect it.

Who it suits and why

This is for travellers who want a proper round in the morning and a beach in the afternoon. Greek islands with golf courses suit people who want to keep their swing while they’re away, but still have harbour dinners and boat days. It’s led by Crete, because it has the only true 18-hole championship course in the islands. The Crete Golf Club in Hersonissos is set in the hills above the sea, with wide fairways, olive groves and mountain views, and you can play early then be in Elounda or Chania for lunch. Corfu is a classic too, with Corfu Golf Club in Ropa Valley, a parkland 18-hole that’s been there since the sixties, flat enough for a relaxed round and close to Corfu Town and Kassiopi for an afternoon swim. Rhodes has Afandou Golf, an 18-hole right by the sea on the east coast, with open fairways, sea breeze, and Lindos and Anthony Quinn Bay just down the road for after-golf snorkelling. Kos has Kos Golf at Marmari, a newer 18-hole by the beach, very playable, with flat terrain and views across to Psefidon. There are also smaller options if you just want to keep loose. Naxos and Paros have driving ranges and pitch and putt near the main towns, and Santorini has a small practice centre near Kamari, but for full rounds it’s really Crete, Corfu, Rhodes and Kos. It’s perfect if you want early tee times, nine or eighteen holes before it gets hot, then boats, beaches and tavernas. It’s less suited to you if you want to party till 6am every night. Golf starts at first light in summer, so if your holiday is all Mykonos beach clubs till dawn, you’ll miss the cool window every morning.

What to keep in mind

Golf on the Greek islands is all about season, heat, and staying near the course. Most of these islands have direct UK flights from May to October, around three hours ten to four hours thirty, or a quick hop via Athens, and ferries from Piraeus are usually two to nine hours and 40 to 95 euro. May to June and September to early October is the sweet spot. You get 22 to 28 degrees, sea temps of 22 to 25, and morning tee times around seven to nine that are still cool enough to enjoy. July and August you can still play but you need to be out first thing, as midday can hit 30 to 35 degrees, especially in Crete, Rhodes and Kos. On the ground, base yourself close to the fairway. Hersonissos or Elounda in Crete for Crete Golf Club, Ropa Valley or Corfu Town in Corfu for Corfu Golf Club, Afandou or Kolymbia in Rhodes for Afandou Golf, and Marmari or Tigaki in Kos for Kos Golf. A green fee for 18 holes is usually 60 to 90 euro, a buggy 30 to 40 euro, club hire 30 to 50 euro, and most courses have a practice range and academy if you want a lesson. Bring light breathable kit, a cap, plenty of water, and soft spikes as many clubhouses are casual. Book tee times a day ahead in high summer, plan for a sea swim straight after your round, and go in early June or mid September when you get warm seas, quiet fairways and empty beaches rather than full August heat and crowds.
