Less suited to those who want white Cycladic cubes and caldera sunsets. If you want Santorini style cliffs, Milos caves or Naxos big beaches, these Saronic islands will feel greener, lower, more pine than volcanic, and quieter at night with tavernas not beach clubs.
What to keep in mind
1 hour islands run year round not just summer. Aegina, Poros, Hydra and Spetses have ferries 5 to 10 times daily from Piraeus port 12km from Athens centre, fast ferries 40 to 75 minutes cost 20 to 38 euro, traditional ferries 1 to 2.5 hours cost 12 to 22 euro, and Saronic Ferries and Alpha Lines operate 365 days. No UK direct flights needed – fly to Athens 3.5 to 4 hours from UK then metro to Piraeus 45 minutes.
On the ground travel light and book day of travel outside August. Hydra and Spetses ban cars so walk or water taxi 10 to 30 euro, Aegina and Poros allow car hire but rent on island, Agistri is best for bikes. Last ferry back to Piraeus is around 7pm to 9pm so check times same day, carry cash for small tavernas and visit May, June or September for warm sea without August crowds.
