Greek islands for snorkelling

Greek islands for snorkelling

Greek islands for snorkelling are islands where the sea turns to glass, where rocky coves and underwater caves make perfect aquariums, where you drift over pebble beds, sea grass and bright fish without ever needing a boat.

They are islands where a mask is all you need, with clear water, sheltered bays, reefs close to shore and taverna breaks in between, and that quiet, wide-eyed feeling of floating face-down in a whole other world just meters from the beach.

Who it suits and why

Best for travellers who want mask on more than sunbed. Greek islands for snorkelling suit clear water chasers, families with teens and boat day lovers – headed by Zakynthos for Keri Caves, Marathonisi turtle bay and Porto Limnionas rock pools with Loggerhead turtles, Milos for Kleftiko white sea caves only by boat and Sarakiniko white rock channels, Crete for Elafonisi pink lagoon shallows, Balos lagoon and Chrissi island boat, Lefkada for Porto Katsiki and Agios Nikitas deep blue drop offs, Rhodes for Anthony Quinn Bay sheltered pebble bay and Traganou Caves, plus Paros for Kolymbithres granite pools sheltered from meltemi, and Naxos for Rina Cave and Agios Prokopios calm sand edge. Ideal if you want turquoise 10 to 30m visibility, caves and fish not just sand.

Less suited to those who want big waves and surf only. If you want Mykonos Paradise beach club waves and Malia strip till 4am with no early boat, snorkelling islands with 9am boat departures, reef shoes needed, no touch turtle rules and calm water focus will feel too quiet and early.

What to keep in mind

Snorkel islands need calm sea and boat access. Zakynthos, Milos, Crete, Lefkada via Preveza, Rhodes, Paros, Naxos have direct UK flights 3 hours 10 to 4 hours 30 May to October or via Athens 45 to 75 minutes, plus ferries Piraeus to Milos Paros Naxos 2 to 5 hours 40 to 85 euro. Sea 22 to 24 June, 24 to 27 July to September warmest for long mask time, visibility best morning 9am to 11am before wind. Kleftiko Milos and Keri Zakynthos only by boat 30 to 60 euro, Anthony Quinn Rhodes shore entry free. Turtles Zakynthos protected no touch 5m distance.

On the ground pick shelter and access. Base Laganas or Keri Zakynthos for turtle and cave boats, Pollonia or Adamas Milos for Kleftiko boats, Aliki Paros for Kolymbithres shelter from meltemi July to August 15 to 25 knots, Kolymbia Rhodes for Anthony Quinn walk in, Agios Nikitas Lefkada for cliff drop snorkel. Carry own mask 15 to 30 euro better than rental, reef shoes for pebble bays Milos Zakynthos, rash vest for 2 hour water time, book boats morning for flat sea, hire car 25 to 45 euro day for beach hop and go late June or early September for 26 to 28 degrees air and fewer boats over reef than August peak.
