Who it suits and why
Best for travellers who want adventure over ease. These islands suit those who love rugged trails, wild swimming coves, sheer cliffs, tiny hamlets, and feeling like you have earned your swim and your sunset. Ideal if you want to explore, hike and get properly off-grid.
Less suited to those who want comfort and convenience. If you want long sandy beaches with sunbeds and service, big hotels with pools and spas, lots of restaurants and beach clubs, or easy transfers and organised tours, a more developed island will be far more comfortable.
What to keep in mind
Intrepid means remote, rough and seasonal. Most have no airport at all and need a ferry of 6 to 12 hours from Athens with only two or three sailings a week, often overnight. Direct UK flights are not available and UK connections are indirect, and high winds can leave you stranded for a day.
On the island infrastructure is minimal. Accommodation is a handful of guesthouses and rooms to rent rather than resorts, and there may be no buses, only one or two taxis and very limited hire. Beaches are often wild pebble or rock with no shade, water or lifeguard and need a steep hike or small boat to reach, and shops, ATMs and tavernas cluster in the port and may close for days in low season.
