Who it suits and why
Best for travellers who want to skip the obvious. These islands suit those who love offbeat villages, artsy communities, barefoot tavernas, and a mix of hippie heritage and low-key local life over polished resorts. Ideal if you want a Greek island that feels different from everyone else’s.
Less suited to those who want classic comfort and ease. If you want long sandy beaches with rows of sunbeds and waiters, large hotels with pools and kids clubs, luxury boutiques and beach clubs, or lots of organised tours and English menus everywhere, a more classic island will be more comfortable.
What to keep in mind
Alternative often means less developed and harder to reach. Many have no international airport and need a domestic flight plus a ferry of 4 to 10 hours from Athens with infrequent sailings. Direct UK flights are usually only April to October and often require a change.
On the island things are more independent. Accommodation is mainly small guesthouses, studios and eco-retreats rather than big resorts, and buses, taxis and hire cars are limited and need booking ahead in high summer. Beaches tend to be wilder and unorganised with little shade or service and may need a hike or boat, and shops, ATMs and pharmacies are often only in the main town and close for siesta.
