What to keep in mind
Best alternative islands are still alternative, so they are often remote and seasonal. Many have no international airport and need a domestic flight plus a ferry of 5 to 10 hours from Athens, with only a few sailings a week. Direct UK flights are rare and usually only April to October, and meltemi winds can delay boats.
On the ground facilities are independent and limited. Stay is mainly small guesthouses, design studios and eco-retreats rather than large resorts, and taxis, buses and hire cars are scarce and should be booked well ahead for July and August. Beaches are often wild and unorganised with no sunbeds, bar or lifeguard and may need a walk or water taxi, and ATMs, shops and pharmacies may only be in the port town.
