Least windy Greek islands overall are those sheltered from the summer meltemi and the winter north winds by the mainland or the Turkish coast. The calmest groups year-round are the Ionian islands of Corfu, Paxos, Lefkada, Kefalonia, Ithaca and Zakynthos, the Saronic islands of Aegina, Agistri, Poros, Hydra and Spetses, the islands in enclosed gulfs such as Paleo Trikeri, Trizonia and Elafonisos, and the southern Dodecanese including Rhodes, Symi, Chalki, Tilos, Kos and Leros which sit in the lee of the coast.

The windiest islands are in the central Cyclades such as Mykonos, Andros, Tinos, Paros, Naxos, Ios and Milos where the meltemi is strongest from June to September, and in the open North Aegean such as Lemnos, Samothrace, Agios Efstratios, Skyros and Psara. For the most consistently calm seas choose the Ionian and Saronic for summer beach time and the southern Dodecanese and Crete’s south coast for late season swimming when the meltemi has eased.

FYI: The least windy islands are not in the Cyclades

If you want calm seas, avoid the central Aegean. The Meltemi is the main factor — it blows down the central Aegean and peaks in July and August, though it can start in June and last to September. In some parts it can reach 100km/h, or 7-8 Beaufort. May, June and September are known as the least windy months as a rough rule of thumb. The least windy islands are the Ionian islands — Corfu, Zakynthos, Lefkada, Kefalonia, Ithaki, Kythira and Paxoi. They are shielded from the Etesian winds that sweep across the central Aegean. While virtually all Greek islands get a coastal breeze, islands in sheltered gulfs or protected microclimates experience significantly less wind than windward Aegean islands. Zakynthos, Kefalonia and parts of Corfu are much less prone to the fierce, persistent summer Etesian winds. On the edge of the wind zone are the Sporades — Thassos, Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos — they are just on the edges of the Meltemi so not so much wind. Also sheltered is Antiparos in the Cyclades, located in a sheltered position and less affected by Meltemi, along with Ithaca, Meganisi and Paxoi. The windiest is Mykonos — literally called the Island of the Winds, where locals say it blows hats off, chairs over and tables over. Naxos is one of the most consistently windy locations in Europe with more than 240 days blowing 15+ knots yearly. Paros, Tinos, Andros, Syros and Santorini are also in the windy group, and Crete’s long sandy beaches on the northern coast are very exposed. Rhodes is one of the islands with the most reliable winds from mid-June to mid-September. Even there you can shelter on south or southeast facing beaches or those in deep bays, and southern Crete is less windy than the north.

Who calm islands suit — and who should chase wind instead

Calm islands suit you if you get seasick, travel with small kids, or want flat water for swimming and boat trips. Choose Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos, Lefkada or Paxos in the Ionian if you want the safest bet for low wind year-round. They also stay lush and green while the Cyclades turn barren in August. Choose Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos or Thassos if you want Aegean views without the wind. They suit families who want pine trees down to the sea and protected bays. Choose Antiparos if you want to stay in the Cyclades but avoid the worst gusts. Avoid Mykonos, Tinos, Andros, Paros, Naxos and Santorini if you hate wind in July and August. Avoid northern Crete beaches if you want sheltered swimming — go south. If you are a windsurfer or kitesurfer, flip the list — go to Mykonos, Naxos, Paros or Rhodes from mid-June to September when the wind is most reliable.
